Located in the mountainous expanse of northwestern British Columbia, CBW4 (Bob Quinn Lake) has been transformed into a distinctive fictional RCMP Ranger Station and campground environment for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Created by Bob Caparoula, this freeware release elevates a little-known airfield into a more visually engaging destination. It introduces small structures, ground details, and ornamental features that blend seamlessly with the natural grandeur of the surrounding hills and lakes.
Immersive Airfield Modifications
Although Bob Quinn Lake Airport is active in real-world operations, the developer envisioned an RCMP Ranger Station and campsite system to infuse personality into the setting. With carefully placed objects and foliage, pilots get a richer sense of adventure when approaching runway surfaces. The remote airfield's position near rugged elevations delivers rewarding views and challenges for shorter takeoffs and landings.
Highlights of the Scenery
- Upgraded Terrain: Subtle terrain tweaks enhance the local contours, creating a more realistic approach corridor.
- Ranger Outpost and Camping Areas: Modeled details include the fictional station, local tents, and basic facilities, giving the airstrip a vibrant personality.
- Visual Variety: Added “eye-candy” elements liven up the otherwise sparse region, providing something unique to observe while flying through or stopping over.

Development Approach
According to Bob Caparoula, assembling this visually appealing layout involved both the FSX SDK Scenery features and the Abacus Scenery shortcut utility. The mission builder components were leveraged to position objects accurately, ensuring smooth integration with default simulator data. Despite the added details, the files are frame rate friendly, preserving performance during operations.
Part of a British Columbia Series
This custom airport is the third entry in a British Columbia scenery collection. Each installment attempts to highlight remote Canadian landscapes, underlining the dramatic nature of the province's geography. This particular region, surrounded by wild forests and towering peaks, offers an ideal setting for bush flying or sightseeing tours.
