FSX & FSX: Steam Edition 3 min read

Can I run FSX without the original DVD?

Ian Stephens
In short

Run FSX without the original DVD after installation and activation. Learn when discs are still needed and how to fix unexpected DVD prompts.

Yes. A legitimate boxed copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator X normally runs without the original DVD once FSX is fully installed and activated. The discs are needed for installation, repair or reinstallation, not routine flying. FSX: Steam Edition is entirely disc-free, but its Steam licence does not replace a boxed FSX key.

When do you still need the FSX discs?

The boxed FSX DVDs are installation media rather than discs that must remain in the drive while flying.

A boxed product key is not a downloadable copy of FSX and cannot be redeemed as a Steam Edition licence. Our comparison of boxed FSX with Steam Edition explains the installation and licensing differences.

If your only usable copy is already installed, do not uninstall the working installation until you have suitable installation media or another licensed edition. Copying the FSX programme folder alone is not a dependable reinstall because activation data and supporting Windows components are stored elsewhere.

What should I do if FSX asks for the DVD?

A DVD prompt is not normal when starting a complete, activated FSX installation, so check what is actually being launched before changing any files.

  1. Check the shortcut target. It should open the installed fsx.exe, not a setup programme or file on the DVD drive.
  2. Read the exact message. A request to activate FSX or enter a product key is a licensing problem, not a routine disc check. Use our boxed FSX activation-key checks if the valid key is being rejected.
  3. Check for damaged or missing files. If the installation is incomplete, FSX may need repairing or reinstalling from the original media.
  4. Do not install a “no-DVD” replacement executable. FSX does not normally need one, and modified executables can introduce malware, break add-ons or mismatch the installed service pack or Acceleration files.

On Windows 11, an “out of date license” message is another legacy activation fault rather than proof that the DVD must remain inserted. Follow the Windows 11 legacy-licence repair instead of replacing fsx.exe.

Can I install boxed FSX on another PC without the DVD?

No—not from the boxed product key alone. A new installation requires the original installation media or a complete lawful backup of that media; a computer without an optical drive can use an external USB DVD drive.

If the discs are lost or unreadable, FSX: Steam Edition is the straightforward disc-free alternative, but it is a separate licence. The boxed key does not transfer the existing ownership to Steam.

Can FSX: Steam Edition run offline?

FSX: Steam Edition can normally run offline after Steam has installed it and verified the account’s ownership at least once. The Steam client must be configured for offline use, while internet access is still needed for downloading, updating and some account checks; our guide to FSX offline play and Steam connectivity covers those limits.
