Add Indian Railways routes and trains to Train Simulator Classic by installing compatible third-party RailWorks packages, then adding every route, asset-pack and donor-stock dependency they specify. Install .rwp files through Utilities.exe; for archives, merge their Assets and Content folders into the RailWorks directory. Clear the cache before testing the supplied scenario.
Check that the add-on is compatible
The package must be made for Train Simulator Classic, also described on older releases as Train Simulator or RailWorks. Content for Microsoft Train Simulator, Open Rails or Train Sim World is not interchangeable, even when it depicts the same Indian route or locomotive.
Before installing anything, check the documentation for:
- Required routes and asset packs: scenery, track, signals and stations may come from separate products.
- Donor rolling stock: many Indian locomotives and coaches are reskins rather than complete models. They will not work without the specified original vehicle.
- Included scenarios: a route package may contain no playable service, while a locomotive may lack a Quick Drive consist.
- Installation order: patches, reskins and scenario packs sometimes expect the base files to be present first.
An add-on can install successfully while still being unusable because Utilities.exe does not automatically obtain or validate its dependencies.
How do I install an Indian Railways add-on?
Install the dependencies first, followed by the route, rolling stock and any separate scenario package.
- Find the RailWorks directory. Use Steam's local-file browsing option and open the folder containing
RailWorks.exe,AssetsandContent. Do not assume the library is installed on the system drive. - Back up affected folders. This is especially useful when an update will overwrite an existing route, reskin or provider folder.
- Install the dependencies. Add every required base route, scenery pack, locomotive and reskin prerequisite named in the documentation. If a requirement is unavailable, the main package will usually remain incomplete.
- Install an RWP package. Run
Utilities.exefrom the RailWorks directory, open its Package Manager and select the.rwpfile. - Install a manual archive correctly. Extract it first. Copy its top-level
AssetsandContentfolders into the directory containingRailWorks.exe, allowing Windows to merge folders without deleting the existing ones. Some packages require a geometry file from an original locomotive you own. Copy only the file specified by the documentation; do not guess which donor model is compatible.
- Clear the blueprint cache. Use Train Simulator Classic's Clear Cache command, restart the simulator and test the scenario supplied with the package.
A correctly installed route normally has a structure resembling Content\Routes\<route-GUID>\RouteProperties.xml. Rolling stock normally sits below Assets\<provider>\<product>. A mistake we see constantly is an extra wrapper directory, producing paths such as RailWorks\RailWorks\Assets or Content\Content\Routes.

Why is the Indian route or locomotive missing?
Missing content is usually caused by an absent dependency, an incorrect folder level or the lack of a scenario or Quick Drive preload.

Where will the new route and train appear?
A route appears only in the driving categories for which it has scenarios, while a locomotive appears in Quick Drive only when a suitable preload consist exists.
If the package includes Quick Drive support, choose the route, origin, destination and consist there. If either the route or train is missing from those selectors, use our Quick Drive configuration and troubleshooting advice to distinguish a missing preload from an unsupported destination.
For stock without a preload, create or clone a scenario, enable the relevant provider and product in the Object Set Filter, and place the locomotive and coaches manually. The steps for building and testing a custom scenario cover this without requiring you to modify the route itself.
Can I use an Indian train on another route?
Indian rolling stock can usually be placed on another Train Simulator Classic route, but technical and visual compatibility still matters. Broad-gauge vehicles may look wrong on standard-gauge track, and an electric locomotive may not operate correctly where the route lacks the required electrification.
Couplers, braking behaviour, platform clearances and cab signalling can also differ. Choose a route with suitable track and electrification, then test the complete consist in a cloned or new scenario rather than altering an original scenario.
