Recommended Xbox controller sensitivity settings

These settings give a standard Xbox gamepad smoother movement around the centre while retaining full control authority. Where the simulator displays separate positive and negative sensitivity values, set both sides equally.

Negative sensitivity softens the first part of the stick movement; it does not remove full elevator or aileron travel. Pitch needs slightly more softening because the short gamepad stick makes small elevator corrections particularly easy to overdo.

If the rudder is presented as two separate trigger inputs rather than one centred axis, leave its response near default and check that both triggers return fully when released. Do not add a large dead zone simply to make taxiing easier.

How do you apply these settings?

Use a custom controller profile so an update or changed preset does not destroy a known-good configuration.

  1. Select the correct device. Open the simulator’s control settings and choose the Xbox Wireless Controller rather than the keyboard, mouse or general control category.
  2. Duplicate the default profile. Give the copy an identifiable name before changing sensitivity or bindings.
  3. Check the axes. Move the left stick and verify that its horizontal movement operates Ailerons Axis and its vertical movement operates Elevator Axis. Remove duplicate digital left, right, up or down assignments.
  4. Enter the starting values. Open the controller’s sensitivity or hardware curve panel and apply the table above. The layout differs between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, but the response-curve principles are the same.
  5. Watch the input indicator. With the controller untouched, the indicator should remain centred. Move each control slowly and confirm that it reaches both endpoints.
  6. Test in calm conditions. Use a familiar light aircraft, trim it properly and make one change at a time. Testing in gusty weather hides whether the curve or the wind caused the movement.

Why does the aircraft still feel twitchy?

Most twitchy Xbox controls are caused by an unsuitable response curve, poor trim or conflicting inputs rather than a lack of dead zone.

  • Excessive dead zone: raising it to 15% or 20% creates a large empty area followed by a sudden control response. Use only enough to suppress real drift.
  • Duplicate bindings: a stick axis and digital direction command assigned to the same control can produce abrupt or apparently random movement. Filter the control list to show assigned commands and remove the duplicate.
  • Piloting assistance: auto-rudder, assisted take-off, assisted landing and AI control can oppose or modify manual inputs. Disable the specific assistance controlling the affected axis.
  • Aircraft out of trim: holding continuous stick pressure leaves little room for a smooth correction. Trim away sustained pitch force before blaming sensitivity.
  • Reactivity set too low: heavy filtering introduces lag, encouraging larger corrections and pilot-induced oscillation. For fixed-wing aircraft, 60–80% is usually a more useful range than an extremely low value.

A mistake we see constantly is using dead zone to fix general over-sensitivity. Dead zone deals with unwanted movement at the physical centre; sensitivity changes how rapidly the commanded deflection builds after the stick leaves that centre.

Should MSFS 2024 and MSFS 2020 use identical settings?

The same baseline works in both simulators, but separate profiles are better because aircraft control laws and each simulator’s controller handling can make an identical curve feel different.

Treat these as starting points, not mandatory values. An add-on aircraft with its own EFB calibration or control-response system may expect a linear simulator curve; in that case, follow the aircraft’s calibration method rather than stacking two response curves.

How do you fix Xbox controller stick drift in MSFS?

Set the dead zone one or two percentage points above the unwanted movement shown by the simulator’s input indicator.

  1. Release the stick and observe the indicator for several seconds.
  2. Raise the dead zone in small increments until the input remains centred.
  3. Repeat after moving and releasing the stick several times, because worn sensors may not return to the same position consistently.
  4. Leave neutral at 0%; shifting neutral is not a proper drift repair.

If more than roughly 12–15% is required, suspect the controller rather than the simulator. Reconnect it, check its firmware, test another controller if available and, on PC, use our hardware calibration and input checks to separate physical drift from an MSFS curve problem.

Which Xbox controller bindings matter most?

Prioritise analogue flight axes, elevator trim and view reset before assigning less frequently used cockpit functions.
