Why can't I hear AI aircraft sounds in a flight simulator?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix missing AI aircraft sounds in any flight simulator by checking traffic audio, camera attenuation, output routing, add-on models and sound aliases.

If AI aircraft are visible but silent, the usual causes are a muted traffic or environment channel, an interior camera mix that suppresses outside audio, or AI models with missing sound assignments. Confirm that traffic is active, then test beside a running AI aircraft in an external view before changing files.

This is a general flight-simulator audio problem affecting Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX, Prepar3D, X-Plane and older simulators in slightly different ways. The key is to establish whether every AI aircraft is silent or only one downloaded model or traffic package.

Is the AI traffic missing or just silent?

If no AI aircraft can be seen, this is a traffic-generation problem rather than an audio fault. Check traffic density, live or offline traffic selection, airport activity and any traffic injector before touching the sound settings; our explanation of how AI aircraft are generated and displayed covers those variables.

Test with a taxiing or departing aircraft at close range. An aircraft parked at a gate may have its engines shut down, while distant traffic can become inaudible because the simulator attenuates or culls its sound.

How do I restore AI aircraft sounds?

  1. Create a controlled test. Position the camera near a runway or taxiway, wait for a visibly running AI aircraft and switch to an external or free camera. Do not use an inactive aircraft parked at a remote stand as the test case.
  2. Check every relevant sound channel. Raise the master volume and any channels labelled for other aircraft, traffic, environment or sound effects. Names differ between simulators, and AI engines may not use the same slider as the player aircraft.
  3. Verify the output device. Confirm that the simulator and operating-system mixer are sending sound to the intended speakers or headset. If cockpit switches, your own engine and other effects are also missing, use our broader simulator sound troubleshooting checklist first.
  4. Compare default and add-on traffic. Temporarily disable custom traffic aircraft, model-matching packages, audio modifications and traffic injectors. If default AI makes sound, restore the add-ons individually until the silent package is identified.
  5. Reload the traffic. After changing an audio option or package, return to the main menu or restart the simulator. Older simulators often read aircraft sound assignments only when the model is loaded.

Which fault is most likely in each simulator?

SimulatorStrongest clueWhat to check
MSFS 2020 or 2024Default and add-on traffic are all silentSound categories, selected output device and conflicts from traffic or audio packages. Do not install an FSX sound configuration into an MSFS package.
FSX, Prepar3D or FS2004Only downloaded AI models are silentMissing sound files, an absent configuration or an alias pointing to an aircraft folder that is not installed.
X-PlaneBuilt-in AI has sound but injected or online traffic does notThe traffic plug-in's audio option and whether its model set supports aircraft sound. Some visual model sets do not include an audio implementation.

Why can I hear AI aircraft outside but not in the cockpit?

If AI engines are audible externally, their sound files and assignments are working. The quiet cockpit is normally caused by camera-specific mixing, distance attenuation and simulated cockpit insulation rather than a broken traffic package.

Increase the channel for other aircraft or environmental effects cautiously; raising your own engine channel may change nothing. Also compare a nearby departure with a distant aircraft, because external traffic volume falls rapidly with distance and may be directional.

Why are only some AI aircraft silent?

When other traffic sounds normal, the silent model has an incomplete or broken audio assignment. A common FSX and Prepar3D failure is a sound.cfg alias that points to a base aircraft or sound folder that was never installed; some AI packages also use a separate soundai folder or configuration.

Restore the model's complete package rather than copying unrelated WAV files into random folders. Our guide to repairing missing FSX add-on sound files and aliases explains the legacy folder checks in detail. Repaints rarely fix this fault because liveries usually share the base model's sound assignment.

Should I install an AI aircraft sound pack?

Install a sound pack only when a legacy AI model lacks usable sound assets and the pack explicitly supports that simulator. It will not correct a muted channel, the wrong output device or a traffic plug-in that does not implement aircraft audio.

For FS2004, our library includes replacement sound files made for FS2004 aircraft and AI traffic. Back up the existing folders and follow the package layout exactly; FS2004, FSX, modern MSFS and X-Plane audio packages are not interchangeable.
