Fix stuck or unresponsive FSX ailerons by checking axis bindings, calibration, duplicate inputs, autopilot, failures and aircraft systems.
FSX ailerons usually stop responding because the aileron axis is unassigned, assigned twice, badly calibrated or overridden by another controller. First test the keyboard controls in a default aircraft with the autopilot off. If those work, the fault is the controller setup; if not, reset FSX controls and check aircraft failures or add-on systems.
How do I tell whether FSX or the controller is at fault?
A keyboard test in a default FSX aircraft quickly separates a hardware problem from a simulator or aircraft problem.

- Load a default aircraft. Use a default light aircraft rather than the add-on in which the problem appeared. Turn its autopilot off and make sure FSX is neither paused nor in slew mode.
- Test the keyboard. With the standard profile and Num Lock off, numpad 4 commands left aileron, numpad 6 commands right aileron and numpad 5 centres the controls. Modified profiles and compact keyboards may differ, so consult our FSX keyboard-control reference if those keys do nothing.
- Watch the controls. Check the cockpit yoke and the external aileron surfaces while applying left and right input. Then test the aircraft in normal flight at a safe airspeed; ailerons produce little or no rolling force while stationary.
- Disconnect extra controllers. Temporarily leave only the joystick or yoke connected. Rudder pedals, throttles, gamepads and virtual controllers are sometimes given an unwanted aileron assignment automatically.
How do I fix the aileron axis in FSX?
The aileron axis should be assigned once, to the controller's left-right movement, with enough sensitivity to reach full travel.
- Open the FSX controls settings. Menu wording differs slightly between boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, but both provide pages for axes, buttons or keys, and calibration.
- Confirm controllers are enabled. Select the intended joystick or yoke from the device list and find
Ailerons Axis. - Remove duplicate assignments. Inspect every connected device, not just the main controller. Delete any aileron assignment from throttles, pedals, gamepads and unused virtual devices.
- Assign the axis once. Move the stick or yoke left and right when prompted. Use the reverse option only if left input produces right aileron.
- Check sensitivity and null zone. Very low sensitivity or an excessive null zone can make the ailerons appear dead. Use a small null zone that prevents centre jitter while retaining full travel.
- Calibrate outside FSX. Run
joy.cplin Windows, select the controller and confirm that its axis moves smoothly to both ends and returns to centre. If it fails here, recalibrate it or investigate the hardware before changing FSX again. - Test with the default aircraft. Do not return to the original add-on until the default aircraft rolls correctly.

Why are the ailerons stuck at full left or right?
An aileron held at full deflection normally means FSX is receiving a continuous axis or keyboard command.
- Press the assigned aileron-centre command, then release any numpad or arrow keys that may be stuck.
- Unplug controllers one at a time. If the ailerons centre when one device is removed, inspect that device's assignment and Windows calibration.
- Check every device for duplicate
Ailerons Axisbindings. A throttle lever or pedal axis can hold the control hard over even while the yoke appears correctly assigned. - If an external control utility manages the axis, remove the matching assignment from FSX. Mapping the same axis through both systems creates competing inputs.
- Use the restore-defaults option for the control profile if assignments remain corrupted. Record custom bindings first because the reset removes them.
What if the ailerons move but the aircraft will not roll?
Moving ailerons do not produce a useful roll without airflow, and an active autopilot may oppose or replace manual commands.
Test in unpaused flight at normal speed, outside slew mode, with the autopilot master switched off. The flight director alone only displays guidance; it does not move the controls. If the aircraft rolls correctly under those conditions, the input system is working.
If the failure occurs only in one complex add-on, check its control lock, hydraulic pumps, flight-control computers and programmed failures. Clear active FSX failures as well. When the default aircraft works but the add-on does not, repeatedly remapping the joystick is unlikely to help—the cause is inside that aircraft's systems or model.
Finally, distinguish control response from animation. If the aircraft rolls normally but one external aileron remains motionless, the flight control is working and the add-on's visual model or animation is at fault.
