Why does my aircraft pull right in FSX, and how do I calibrate my joystick?

An aircraft that pulls right in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition usually has a mis-centred rudder or aileron axis, duplicate controller assignment, partially applied toe brake, trim input or crosswind. Calibrate the joystick in Windows, then adjust FSX null zones, remove duplicate axes, centre the trim and retest in calm weather.

What causes an aircraft to pull right in FSX?

A right pull can be either yaw, where the nose turns right, or roll, where the right wing drops. That distinction identifies which control and setting to examine.

In many common single-engine FSX aircraft, high-power propeller effects tend to produce left yaw rather than a persistent right pull. Different propeller rotations behave differently, but a strong right pull across several aircraft usually indicates an input, brake or wind problem.

How do I calibrate a joystick for FSX?

Calibrate the joystick's raw Windows input first, then configure its response inside FSX.

  1. Close FSX and centre the controls. Release the joystick, twist grip, throttle and pedals. Disconnect controllers you do not intend to use while diagnosing the problem.
  2. Open Windows Game Controllers. Press the Windows key and R, enter joy.cpl, and select the joystick. Open its properties and watch the Test page without touching the controls. The aileron and rudder indicators should remain centred rather than flickering or creeping right.
  3. Run the Windows calibration wizard. Where the device provides a calibration option, follow its prompts, move each requested axis through its full travel, and leave it centred when instructed. Some devices handle calibration through their own driver and do not display this button.
  4. Check every FSX axis assignment. Open Settings > Controls, or use Options > Settings > Controls from the in-flight menu. On the Control Axes page, select each connected device in turn. Keep only one assignment for ailerons, elevator and rudder unless a deliberate combined setup requires otherwise. Our FSX axis-and-button setup guide covers the wider mapping process.
  5. Remove duplicate rudder and aileron inputs. FSX often assigns both a joystick twist grip and separate pedals to the rudder. It can also map a gamepad or virtual controller automatically. Deleting the unwanted assignment is better than trying to hide the conflict with a large null zone.
  6. Set sensitivity and null zones. On the Calibration page, start with enough sensitivity to reach full control deflection; a high setting is a normal starting point in FSX. Add only enough null zone to stop movement around the physical centre. Repeat this for the rudder and toe brakes if they are separate devices.
  7. Test a clean flight. Load a default aircraft in calm weather with balanced fuel and payload rather than using an old saved flight. Centre the trim, leave the autopilot off and check the aircraft from both cockpit and external views.

If an axis does not appear in Windows, refuses to move through its full range or is absent from FSX, use our controller detection and axis troubleshooting steps. If the axis is stable in joy.cpl but drifts in FSX, the cause is almost certainly an FSX assignment, sensitivity or null-zone setting. Movement visible in Windows after calibration points instead to the device or its driver.

Why does the aircraft pull right only on the runway?

A runway-only right pull usually comes from the right brake, rudder or nosewheel input, although crosswind and normal propeller forces can also turn the aircraft during take-off.

Check that the right toe-brake axis returns fully to its released position. Some pedal sets require the brake axes to be reversed in FSX; an incorrectly reversed axis can apply a brake while the pedal is untouched. The aircraft turns towards the wheel being braked, so a partially applied right brake produces a right pull.

If you use dedicated rudder controls, disable autorudder while testing because it can add yaw in response to aileron input. Test on the same runway with calm weather; if the pull disappears, the original wind was contributing to the behaviour.

Why does it pull right only in flight?

An airborne-only pull is more likely to be aileron or rudder drift, saved trim, uneven loading, wind or the aircraft's own flight model.

Watch what the aircraft actually does. If its wings and heading remain steady but its ground track moves right, that is wind drift rather than a control fault. If the right wing drops, inspect the aileron axis and aileron trim. If the nose yaws while the wings stay nearly level, inspect the rudder axis and rudder trim.

Load a default FSX aircraft with balanced tanks and payload to create a baseline. If every default aircraft flies straight but one add-on does not, joystick calibration is unlikely to be the cause.
