The Airbus A330-200 is the shorter, lower-capacity A330ceo with generally greater range; the A330-300 is 4.84 metres longer, carries more passengers and cargo, and usually flies a shorter distance. Seating varies substantially with airline configuration, premium cabins, galleys, toilets and exit limits. Published range also depends on the production standard, weight option, engines, payload and test assumptions; it is not a guaranteed operational figure. The shared cabin width means airlines can use broadly similar seat arrangements in each model. The A330-300 gains capacity through extra fuselage length, not a wider cabin. Both were offered with General Electric CF6, Pratt & Whitney PW4000 and Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engine families, so engine appearance alone does not identify the variant.
Why does the shorter A330-200 fly farther?
The A330-200 generally flies farther because its shorter fuselage reduces structural weight and passenger capacity while retaining a similar wing and substantial fuel capability.
That advantage is a payload-range trade-off. Maximum fuel and maximum payload cannot necessarily be carried together without exceeding the aircraft's maximum take-off weight. Winds, reserves, diversion fuel, runway length, temperature and cargo can reduce the usable range considerably.
Later high-weight A330-300 versions narrowed the difference and can operate long sectors of their own. It is therefore unsafe to assume that every A330-200 has more range than every A330-300 without checking the exact aircraft and weight standard.
Which A330 carries more passengers and cargo?
The A330-300 carries more passengers and offers more lower-deck cargo space because of its longer fuselage.
- Choose the A330-200 for a thinner route where range matters more than maximum seat count.
- Choose the A330-300 where demand can fill the additional seats or where more containerised cargo capacity is valuable.
- Compare economics by route, not just aircraft size: the -200 can require less trip fuel, while a well-filled -300 can produce a lower cost per seat.
This is why airlines may operate both. The models serve overlapping missions, but they optimise different combinations of distance, passenger demand and cargo.
How can you tell an A330-200 from an A330-300?
The most reliable visual clue is fuselage length: the A330-200 looks noticeably shorter relative to its wing, while the A330-300 has longer sections ahead of and behind the wing.
The -200 also has a larger vertical tail, compensating for the shorter fuselage and reduced moment arm. Door and window spacing can provide supporting clues, but airline interiors, blocked windows and viewing angle make them less dependable. The engine type is not a useful discriminator because both variants were available with the same broad engine choices.
Are the A330-200 and A330-300 the same as the A330neo?
No. The A330-200 and A330-300 are the original-engine family commonly called the A330ceo; the A330-800 and A330-900 are the corresponding shorter and longer A330neo models.
The neo aircraft use Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and incorporate aerodynamic, structural and cabin changes. An A330-900 is not simply an A330-300 with a different name, so its weights, fuel planning and performance data are not interchangeable.
Which variant should you choose in a flight simulator?
In a flight simulator, choose the A330-200 for longer or lower-demand routes and the A330-300 for heavier passenger and cargo loads—but only if the add-on actually models their different weights, tanks and performance.
A mistake we see constantly is treating a livery as though it changes the aircraft variant. It does not. Reusing an A330-300 flight-planning profile for an A330-200 can also produce incorrect operating weights, fuel quantities and take-off calculations. Check the model name, aircraft documentation and payload interface rather than relying on the paint scheme.

Do not load maximum fuel and maximum payload automatically: their combined mass may exceed the model's take-off limit.
