Why does aircraft aluminium look green?

Aircraft aluminium is not naturally green. The colour usually comes from a corrosion-resistant primer applied to the metal, historically zinc chromate in a green-tinted formulation; some chemical conversion coatings can also look yellow-green. These layers protect aluminium alloys, especially inside structures where a decorative topcoat is unnecessary.

What makes aircraft aluminium look green?

A pigmented protective coating creates the familiar green appearance. Bare aluminium naturally develops a thin, largely transparent oxide film, but that film does not make the metal green.

Historically, zinc chromate was a widely used corrosion-inhibiting primer pigment. Zinc chromate is yellow, while green versions were commonly produced by tinting the primer with black pigment. The pigment ratio, binder, specification and ageing could produce anything from yellow-green to dark olive.

The primer performs two jobs: its binder creates a barrier against moisture and contaminants, while the chromate pigment helps suppress corrosion if water reaches minor defects. A chemical conversion coating serves a related purpose but is not the same as paint. It chemically treats the aluminium surface, improves paint adhesion and often appears pale gold, yellow or iridescent green.

Is the green colour aluminium corrosion?

Uniform green aircraft aluminium is normally coated, not corroding. Aluminium corrosion more often appears as white or grey powder, surface dulling, raised paint, pitting or exfoliation.

Local green-blue deposits, streaks or residue can come from contamination or an adjacent material and require proper inspection. Colour by itself is not enough to diagnose corrosion, particularly around fasteners, drains, batteries or dissimilar-metal joints.

Why were aircraft interiors often painted green?

Green primer was frequently left visible inside cockpits, wheel wells, fuselages and access bays because those areas required corrosion protection but not a decorative exterior finish. Omitting an unnecessary topcoat also reduced material, labour and weight.

Cockpits could receive a specified low-glare interior finish over the primer, so every green cockpit was not simply exposed zinc chromate. For a useful visual contrast, compare a simulated B-377/C-97 cockpit with green-coated interior surfaces against a polished-aluminium DC-3 exterior.

There was no universal aircraft green. Country, manufacturer, factory, production period and component supplier all mattered. On the same aircraft, the cockpit, wheel wells and hidden structural bays could have different shades or entirely different coating systems.

Do modern aircraft still use green primer?

Some modern aircraft still have green or yellow-green primers, but the colour does not prove that traditional zinc chromate was used. Manufacturers may specify chromated epoxy primer, a non-chromate alternative or another coating whose pigment is added mainly for coverage and identification.

A complete protection system can include surface preparation, a conversion treatment, primer, topcoat and sealant. Many historic chromate coatings contain hazardous hexavalent chromium. Unknown old primer should not be dry-sanded, ground or sprayed without the approved maintenance procedure, suitable containment and protective equipment.

Which green should restorers and simulator creators use?

The correct shade must come from records for the specific aircraft, component, factory and period—not a generic colour labelled “interior green”. Useful evidence includes:

  • Production details: check the aircraft variant, manufacturer, production batch and original operator.
  • Component location: cockpit walls, structural bays and wheel wells may use different specifications.
  • Visible layer: establish whether the reference shows conversion coating, primer, interior topcoat or weathered paint.
  • Service condition: repairs, repainting, fluids, dirt and ultraviolet exposure can alter the apparent shade.
  • Photographic limits: lighting, film stock, scanning and white balance make exact colour matching from one image unreliable.

A mistake we see constantly in simulator textures is covering every internal surface with one bright green metallic material. Primer should generally render as a painted, non-metallic surface with suitable matt or satin roughness; only chips that penetrate the coating should reveal reflective aluminium beneath.
