Can an AM radio station be used for ADF navigation?

Yes—an aircraft ADF can often receive a compatible medium-wave AM broadcast station and point towards its transmitter. However, the station is not an NDB and should be treated only as an informal bearing source. It cannot replace a charted, monitored navigation aid for an instrument procedure or safety-critical navigation.

Why can an ADF receive an AM broadcast station?

An ADF can receive many AM broadcast stations because their medium-wave frequencies overlap the tuning range of common ADF receivers. Many units cover roughly 190 to 1,750 kHz, although the exact limits depend on the installed equipment.

The receiver uses its loop and sense antennas to determine the direction of the incoming carrier. It does not inherently know whether that carrier belongs to an aeronautical NDB or a commercial broadcaster. The needle points towards the transmitting antenna site, which may be several miles from the station’s studio or the city named in its branding.

Does every AM station work with an ADF?

No; the transmitter must fall inside the ADF’s frequency range and produce a usable signal at the aircraft’s position.

  • Medium-wave AM broadcasting: Usually compatible when its frequency is inside the receiver’s tuning range.
  • FM broadcasting: Not compatible because FM stations transmit in the VHF band.
  • Aircraft COM transmissions: These also use amplitude modulation, but their VHF frequencies are far outside an ADF’s range.
  • Internet or satellite radio: Playing the station’s audio does not create a direction-finding signal.

Reception range is not guaranteed. Broadcast stations may reduce power, change to a directional antenna pattern or stop transmitting at certain times.

How do you use an AM station with an ADF?

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check that the aircraft has an ADF and that the station frequency is within its tuning range.
  2. Tune the frequency in kHz. Select ADF mode rather than ANT mode. ANT is intended mainly for audio reception and normally does not provide a usable bearing indication. Our guide to ADF modes and aircraft radio-stack controls explains the usual selectors.
  3. Identify what you are receiving. Listen to the audio and confirm the station’s call sign or local identification. Shared network programming alone may not prove which transmitter you have tuned.
  4. Interpret the needle correctly. A fixed-card indicator shows relative bearing, while an RMI normally shows magnetic bearing directly. The station provides no distance information, so one bearing gives only a line of position.
  5. Cross-check another source. Use visual references, GNSS, VOR, a second bearing or another approved navigation source before relying on the result.

Is an AM station equivalent to an NDB?

No; an AM broadcast station is intended to deliver programmes to listeners, while an NDB is an aeronautical navigation facility with a published position, frequency, identifier and operational status.

An AM station can therefore be useful for rough orientation or supplementary VFR navigation. Do not substitute one when an instrument procedure requires a named NDB or another approved navigation source.

What can make the AM station bearing inaccurate?

An AM-derived bearing is vulnerable to the same basic ADF errors as an NDB bearing, plus uncertainties specific to commercial broadcasting.

  • Night effect: Reflected skywave signals can make the needle wander or point towards an apparent source rather than the ground transmitter.
  • Electrical activity: An ADF may respond to lightning and strong atmospheric static.
  • Co-channel interference: A distant station using the same frequency can corrupt the bearing, especially after dark.
  • Directional transmitter arrays: A broadcaster may use several phased masts or alter its radiation pattern according to its operating schedule.

Will an AM broadcast station work in a flight simulator?

Only if the simulator or aircraft add-on models that transmitter as a receivable ADF signal. Many simulators model aeronautical NDBs but do not reproduce every real-world AM broadcast transmitter.

If the needle does not move, check that the aircraft actually has working ADF equipment, the avionics are powered, the frequency is entered in kHz and ADF mode is selected. If those are correct, the station is probably absent from the simulator’s radio-navigation data; receiving or streaming its audio separately will not drive the simulated ADF needle.
