Learn how to arm automatic spoilers in an airliner simulator, verify deployment at touchdown, and fix common control or logic failures.
To arm automatic spoilers in an airliner simulator, place the speedbrake lever in its ARMED detent during landing checks and confirm the armed annunciation. Leave it armed through touchdown; ground spoilers should deploy when landing-gear and thrust conditions are satisfied. Stow them after deceleration, and disarm them immediately for a go-around.
Across airliner simulators and Aviation & Real-World Flying procedures, the principle is consistent, but the lever action, cockpit indication and deployment logic are aircraft-specific. Use the checklist supplied with the simulated aircraft rather than assuming every Boeing, Airbus or regional jet behaves identically.
How do I arm the spoilers for landing?
- Retract any flight spoilers. If you used the speedbrake during descent, return the lever fully to its retracted position before trying to select ARM.

- Move the lever into ARM. A Boeing-style lever normally moves into an ARM detent. An Airbus-style speedbrake lever is typically pulled or lifted into its armed position rather than moved aft.
- Confirm the cockpit indication. Look for an armed light, memo or status message such as
SPEED BRAKE ARMEDorGND SPLRS ARMED. The exact wording depends on the aircraft. - Leave the lever alone through touchdown. Bring the thrust levers fully to idle as required and let the automatic system command ground-spoiler extension.
- Verify deployment and then stow. After touchdown, check that the lever has moved to the deployed position and that the spoiler indication shows extension. Retract the spoilers during the after-landing flow once braking no longer requires them.

What is the difference between armed and extended spoilers?
Armed means the spoilers remain retracted while the system waits for touchdown conditions; extended means spoiler panels are physically raised. Moving a speedbrake lever aft during descent selects flight spoilers immediately and is not the same as arming automatic ground spoilers.

Do not use a generic spoiler toggle as a substitute for ARM unless the simulated aircraft specifically interprets it that way. A toggle often commands immediate extension, which is the opposite of what you want on short final.
What should automatic spoilers do at touchdown?
Automatic ground spoilers should rise promptly after the main landing gear contacts the runway and the system detects the required thrust and landing conditions. The exact logic may use wheel spin, landing-gear compression, air-ground sensing, thrust-lever position or a combination of these.
That weight-on-wheels and landing-gear sensing logic explains why spoilers may remain retracted during a float or when only one wheel has touched. Once deployed, the panels dump lift and place more aircraft weight on the wheels, improving tyre braking and directional control.

Why did my automatic spoilers fail to deploy?
The most common simulator causes are an incorrect control assignment, a lever that is not fully in the ARM detent, or thrust levers that never reached idle.
- The spoilers were selected rather than armed: Return the lever to retracted, then use the dedicated ARM detent or command.
- A hardware axis is jittering: Axis noise can move the virtual lever out of ARM just before touchdown. Increase the neutral area slightly, recalibrate the axis or remove a conflicting assignment.
- One thrust lever is above idle: Check every engine rather than looking only at the combined throttle position.
- The aircraft has not registered touchdown: A prolonged float, one-wheel contact or inaccurate add-on ground sensing can prevent the required air-ground signal.
- Two controls operate the same lever: Keyboard, joystick and throttle-quadrant assignments can fight each other. Remove duplicate spoiler-axis and toggle bindings.
- The add-on does not model automatic deployment: Simpler aircraft may animate spoilers but omit realistic arming and touchdown logic. Check the supplied documentation before diagnosing a hardware fault.
If the spoilers remain down after a firm touchdown, verify the cockpit indication first. Once the aircraft is safely on the runway, select full ground spoilers manually if that is the procedure modelled for the aircraft; do not become distracted by troubleshooting during the flare.
What happens during a go-around or rejected take-off?
For a go-around before touchdown, disarm or stow the speedbrake as required by the aircraft checklist and verify retraction as take-off thrust is applied. Many airliners retract the spoilers automatically when thrust advances, but relying on that protection can hide a bad control assignment.
A bounced landing needs particular care because ground spoilers may begin extending at the first contact. Follow the aircraft's go-around procedure and avoid manually commanding full spoiler while airborne.
