What is the best AI traffic add-on for FSX?

In short

Find the best AI traffic add-on for FSX. Compare World of AI, Traffic 360 and custom schedules, plus installation, missing traffic and FPS fixes.

For most FSX and FSX: Steam Edition users, World of AI is the best freeware AI traffic add-on. It provides recognisable airlines, suitable liveries and performance-friendly AI models. Its timetables are historical, not live, so custom flight plans are better when accurate modern routes and schedules matter.

Which FSX AI traffic add-on should I choose?

Choose World of AI for free airline traffic unless schedule accuracy, general aviation or all-in-one management matters more than broad carrier coverage.

Why is World of AI the best freeware FSX AI traffic download?

World of AI remains the practical freeware choice because it combines airline-specific schedules with aircraft built for AI use rather than detailed cockpit operation.

That distinction matters in FSX. Filling a hub with complex flyable aircraft can consume far more CPU and graphics resources than using purpose-built AI models. World of AI also lets you install selected airlines instead of committing to one enormous worldwide schedule.

Its weakness is age. The packages represent historical timetable periods, and some older models or textures can misbehave under FSX's optional DX10 Preview mode. World of AI is best for believable airport atmosphere, not for reproducing a particular day's real operations.

How do I install World of AI in FSX and FSX: Steam Edition?

Install World of AI through its package installer, select the correct FSX root folder and test each group of packages before adding more.

  1. Close FSX and back up existing traffic files. Schedule BGL files are commonly stored in Scenery\World\scenery, although other active scenery folders can also contain traffic schedules.
  2. Obtain the installer and airline packages. Our World of AI package-selection and installer notes explain which files are required and how they work together.
  3. Keep package archives intact. When the installer expects a package archive, point it to that archive rather than manually extracting and rearranging its contents.
  4. Select FSX as the target simulator. Verify the root folder containing fsx.exe. FSX: Steam Edition is normally below the chosen Steam library in steamapps\common\FSX; boxed FSX uses a different location. Automatic detection can select the wrong copy when both have been installed.
  5. Check Windows write permission. If an older installer cannot write to an FSX folder protected by Windows, run it with elevated permission after confirming that the destination path is correct.
  6. Confirm the installed locations. AI aircraft should appear as individual folders under SimObjects\Airplanes. Compiled schedules normally appear as BGL files in an active scenery folder.
  7. Restart FSX and run a diagnostic test. Set Airline traffic density to 100 per cent temporarily, then load a large airport served by an installed carrier. Try more than one simulator time and day before deciding that a package is empty.

If you want to remove FSX's fictional default airlines, back up and disable trafficAircraft.bgl, commonly found in Scenery\World\scenery. Rename it so that it no longer ends in .bgl, or move the backup outside every active scenery folder. Do not delete it.

Why is no AI traffic showing in FSX?

Empty airports are usually caused by a traffic slider, an incorrect installation path, a conflicting legacy BGL or unsuitable airport parking.

  1. Test at 100 per cent density. Each compiled flight plan has a traffic-percentage threshold. A low slider can therefore exclude an entire schedule rather than simply removing a predictable proportion of aircraft.
  2. Check the simulator root. Make sure the installer targeted the copy of FSX that you actually run, especially after moving a Steam library or installing boxed FSX and Steam Edition on the same PC.
  3. Inspect the aircraft folder depth. FSX expects each aircraft's aircraft.cfg and model folders inside its own folder directly below SimObjects\Airplanes. An extra wrapper folder can stop the aircraft loading.
  4. Restart the simulator. FSX must rescan newly installed aircraft and traffic files. Installing a schedule while the simulator is open is not a reliable test.
  5. Look for an FS2004-format traffic BGL. A legacy FS2004 traffic file in an active scenery area can suppress FSX-format schedules. Temporarily disable recently added traffic BGL files one at a time, restarting FSX after each change.
  6. Check airport parking. AI aircraft may not spawn when the airport lacks a suitable parking type or radius. Conflicting airport scenery can also leave FSX using an unexpected parking layout.
  7. Verify custom aircraft references. Every aircraft entry used by a flight plan must match the corresponding title= value in aircraft.cfg exactly.
  8. Test without DX10 Preview. If traffic is present but aircraft are black, partly invisible or missing textures, disable DX10 Preview before changing the schedules.

A mistake we see constantly is testing one quiet airport at one time with the airline slider set very low. First prove that the schedules work under generous test conditions; then reduce the density to a sensible operating level.

Is World of AI live or up to date?

No. World of AI uses compiled weekly timetables from historical schedule periods; it does not download live positions or continually update airline routes.

The aircraft still move, communicate with FSX ATC and follow scheduled departures and arrivals, but “AI traffic” does not mean “live traffic”. Traffic 360 and the other older commercial FSX suites also rely on fixed-era schedules.

For specific modern routes, cargo networks or virtual-airline operations, follow our method for building and compiling custom FSX schedules. Custom traffic is only as up to date as the timetable you supply and maintain.

What about Traffic 360 on PC?

Traffic 360 is most useful to existing owners who want a broad, centrally managed FSX traffic installation rather than separate airline packages.

Its advantage is convenience: one commercial suite can provide a mixed traffic environment and management tools. Its drawbacks are the age of its schedules and possible friction with older installers, licence activation and non-standard FSX: Steam Edition paths on newer Windows installations.

Traffic 360 is not a live-data service, and buying an older commercial package does not make its timetable newer than freeware. We would choose World of AI for a free, selective airline setup; Traffic 360 makes more sense when a working licensed copy is already available and its management interface is the priority.

Does Orbx Central add FSX AI traffic?

No. Orbx Central is a product installer and library manager, not an FSX AI traffic generator.

An airport or scenery product managed through it may include static aircraft or alter an airport's parking layout, but static models do not fly scheduled routes. If AI disappears after installing airport scenery, check which airport layout is active and whether it provides suitable gates; installing Orbx Central alone will not populate the airport.

Can I combine World of AI with other FSX traffic packages?

Yes, but only when their schedules do not duplicate the same airlines and routes and their traffic BGL formats are compatible.

Overlapping packages can place repeated callsigns at the same airport, send identical flights to the same gate and waste CPU time. Different BGL filenames do not prove that their contents are different. Disable suspect schedules one at a time and compare the airport traffic before keeping both enabled.

How do I reduce the frame-rate cost of FSX AI traffic?

Use efficient AI aircraft, remove duplicate schedules and tune airline and general-aviation density at the busiest airport where you normally fly.

  • Keep 100 per cent for diagnosis only. Once installation is confirmed, lower the density until large hubs remain usable.
  • Install selectively. Airlines and regions you never encounter still add schedules and aircraft for FSX to process.
  • Avoid flyable aircraft as bulk AI. Detailed cockpits, systems and high-resolution textures are unnecessary for background traffic.
  • Control airline and GA traffic separately. Reducing one slider does not reduce the other.
  • Remove duplicate and default schedules. This reduces gate competition as well as processor load.
  • Test at a major hub. A setting that performs well at a rural airfield may overload FSX where dozens of aircraft are taxiing and receiving ATC instructions.

Road traffic, boats and airport vehicles have their own performance costs but do not create additional airline flights. For more detailed tuning, use our settings strategy for adding traffic without a severe FPS loss.
