War Thunder
War Thunder is the easiest option for getting into an aircraft and joining combat quickly. Its simulator-oriented modes, cockpit view and VR head tracking can be convincing, but the overall design remains a free-to-play combat game rather than a study-level cockpit simulator.
Choose it for multiplayer action and a lower initial learning barrier. Choose DCS instead if accurate aircraft systems and procedural flying matter more than rapid matchmaking.
Can these simulators be installed directly on a Quest?
No. DCS World, FlightGear and War Thunder are desktop simulators, so the Quest acts as a PC-VR headset while the computer runs the flight model, scenery and graphics.
The dependable free options are therefore PC VR rather than standalone Quest software. Free demos, browser experiments and social-platform flying worlds may appear in the headset's app catalogue, but they do not offer the depth of a full flight simulator. Installing an Android flight game also does not automatically add stereoscopic VR, six-degree-of-freedom tracking or usable cockpit controls.

How do you run a free flight simulator on Meta Quest?
A working Quest PC-VR connection, the correct runtime and sensible graphics settings are required before any of these simulators will perform properly.
- Check the PC first. It must be capable of running the chosen simulator in VR. The headset does not render DCS or FlightGear by itself, and VR is substantially more demanding than a single monitor.
- Connect the headset. Use Quest Link with a suitable USB cable or Air Link over a good local wireless network. For wireless use, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet and keep the headset near the access point.
- Start the PC-VR software. Confirm that the headset is visible before launching the simulator. Use the runtime expected by the simulator rather than forcing unnecessary layers of OpenXR, Meta software and SteamVR to run together.
- Enable VR in the simulator. Launch its VR mode or select the simulator's VR option. Casting the Quest display to a PC is not the reverse of PC VR and will not put a desktop simulator inside the headset.
- Configure physical controls. Bind pitch, roll, yaw, throttle, trim and view-reset controls first. A joystick is the practical minimum; a HOTAS and rudder pedals are better for DCS and more demanding FlightGear aircraft.
- Tune for stable frame timing. Begin with a moderate headset render resolution. Reduce shadows, clouds, anti-aliasing and cockpit display resolution before sacrificing basic instrument readability.

Is Quest 3 better than Quest 2 for free flight simulators?
Quest 3 generally makes cockpit instruments easier to read, but it does not unlock a different collection of free PC flight simulators. Both headsets can use the same compatible PC-VR software.
Quest 3's clearer lenses help when glancing towards gauges without turning your whole head. The PC still determines the rendered detail and frame rate, so changing headset will not cure a GPU or CPU bottleneck.
