What features does a FlightGear joystick need?

How do you configure a joystick in FlightGear?

Set up the joystick by calibrating it first, then assigning one physical axis to each primary FlightGear control.

  1. Connect the joystick before launching FlightGear. Confirm that the operating system recognises it as a game controller.
  2. Calibrate the device. Move every axis through its full range, including the twist grip and throttle. Use the operating system or manufacturer utility where available.
  3. Open FlightGear's joystick configuration interface. Its location varies between launcher and simulator versions, so use the controls or joystick section presented by your build.
  4. Assign the primary axes. Bind left-right movement to aileron, fore-aft movement to elevator, twist to rudder and the slider or lever to throttle.
  5. Check direction and full travel. Reverse any axis that moves the cockpit control the wrong way. Make sure the throttle reaches both idle and full power.

Why is the joystick not working properly in FlightGear?

Most FlightGear joystick problems come from reversed axes, duplicate assignments, poor calibration or the operating system failing to expose the device correctly.

Why are the controls reversed or too sensitive?

A reversed elevator or throttle is an axis-direction problem, not a hardware fault. Invert that individual binding, then add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement while the stick is centred.

If the aircraft reacts too sharply, reduce the response curve or sensitivity where your FlightGear configuration provides that option. Do not use a large dead zone to solve excessive sensitivity; it removes useful control around the centre.

Why does the aircraft move without joystick input?

Uncommanded roll, pitch or yaw usually indicates axis jitter or two controllers bound to the same function. Recalibrate the joystick, apply a small dead zone and remove duplicate bindings from gamepads, pedals or old controller profiles.

A mistake we see constantly is assigning both joystick twist and rudder pedals to yaw, then leaving both active. Even a slightly off-centre unused device can interfere with the controller being flown.

Why does FlightGear not detect the joystick?

If FlightGear detects nothing, close the simulator, reconnect the controller directly rather than through an unreliable hub, verify it in the operating system and restart FlightGear. Linux installations may also require controller-device permissions, particularly when FlightGear is installed through a sandboxed package.
