For most pilots, the Airbus A330 is the best first long-haul airliner in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: it is included, has intercontinental range and is easier to manage than the A380 or 747. Choose the 787 for Boeing familiarity, a detailed A350 or 777 add-on for depth, or the A380X for free PC complexity.

What is the best long-haul aircraft for a beginner?

The included Airbus A330 is our default recommendation for a first long-haul flight in MSFS 2024. It gives you modern Airbus automation, realistic wide-body planning and useful cockpit tools without the size, gate restrictions and performance cost of an A380.

In MSFS 2020, choose the 787-10 if your edition includes it and you prefer a modern Boeing cockpit. Otherwise, the built-in 747-8 is capable but less forgiving on the ground and during approach. PC pilots can also compare our recommended freeware long-haul aircraft for MSFS 2020.

Should I choose Airbus or Boeing for long-haul flights?

Choose Airbus if you already understand managed modes, the MCDU and ECAM; choose Boeing if you prefer CDU programming, MCP selections and EICAS.

Neither is automatically easier. Airbus reduces routine handling workload, but confusion between selected and managed modes causes many failed climbs and descents. Boeing mode changes are often more explicit, yet the aircraft will still miss the route if LNAV, VNAV or the correct active leg has not been established.

A mistake we see constantly is choosing the largest aircraft rather than the cockpit the pilot already understands. Familiar avionics matter far more than an extra thousand miles of theoretical range.

What changes between MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 and console?

Aircraft availability is determined by the simulator version, edition and platform—not just by the aircraft name.

  • MSFS 2024: The included A330 makes this the easiest version in which to start modern Airbus long-haul flying.
  • MSFS 2020: The built-in 747-8 is widely available, while the 787-10 depends on the edition owned.
  • PC: Manually installed freeware and externally managed add-ons offer the widest choice, including aircraft such as the A380X.
  • Xbox and PlayStation: Consoles cannot use manually installed PC packages. Choose an included aircraft or one explicitly released through the in-simulator Marketplace for that platform.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. MSFS 2020 remains PC and Xbox only. Do not assume that an MSFS 2020 aircraft is fully functional in MSFS 2024 merely because it loads; native support, cockpit tools and system behaviour can differ.

How should I prepare my first long-haul flight?

Test the complete aircraft workflow on a short sector before committing to an eight-hour flight.

  1. Fly a shakedown sector. Use a flight of roughly 60–90 minutes to test route import, autopilot modes, descent planning, landing configuration and control bindings.
  2. Choose suitable airports. Check runway length, gate size, approach type and taxi space. An airport that accepts an A330 may not have practical parking for an A380 or 747.
  3. Load payload before finalising fuel. Maximum payload and maximum published range are not available together. Account for wind, taxi fuel, the alternate and reserve rather than filling every tank by default.

  5. Check every FMS page that affects guidance. Confirm weights, cruise altitude, departure, arrival, runway, performance data and route discontinuities. If those terms are unfamiliar, use our practical airliner FMC setup guide before attempting the long sector.
  6. Plan the descent before top of descent. Review weather, landing weight, approach minima, runway and expected arrival while there is still time to correct the route.

Why do long-haul flights go wrong after several hours?

Most late-flight failures begin with an unnoticed setup error, unsupported time acceleration or an arrival programmed too late.

  • The aircraft leaves the magenta line: Check for a discontinuity, vectors leg, incorrect active waypoint or lateral mode that was never armed.
  • Fuel runs short: Recalculate after changing payload, cruise level, route or weather. Do not treat published maximum range as a guaranteed operational range.
  • The descent starts too late: Enter arrival data early and monitor the vertical profile. Heavy wide-bodies cannot lose large amounts of height and speed at the same time.
  • Autopilot oscillates under time acceleration: Use only rates supported by that aircraft and return to normal speed before major turns, level changes and descent. Some complex add-ons do not tolerate acceleration reliably.
  • A saved flight reloads with broken systems: Complex aircraft do not always restore their FMS, electrical or add-on state correctly. Test saving and reloading before relying on it for an overnight sector.
  • Frame rate collapses on arrival: Dense airports, traffic and a complex glass cockpit combine their load at the worst moment. Reduce traffic or object detail before departure if performance is already marginal.
