The Heavy Airliner rating in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a Career Mode progression gate for missions using the largest passenger jets; it is not a real-world type rating or a Free Flight requirement. Unlock it by completing the airline qualification chain and every condition listed on the Heavy Airliner specialisation tile.

How do you unlock Heavy Airliner in MSFS 2024?
The Heavy Airliner item becomes available only after every upstream Career requirement has been recorded as complete.
- Inspect the locked Heavy Airliner item. Open the Career certifications and specialisations area, select it and note every unchecked condition. Treat this displayed checklist as authoritative because mission thresholds and progression requirements can be adjusted by simulator updates.
- Complete the core aeroplane licences. Progress through the Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence branches rather than trying to jump directly to airline operations.
- Earn the required operational ratings. The airline path runs through instrument, multi-engine and jet qualifications. Complete any supporting endorsement or currency requirement connected to the branch as well.
- Pass the Airline Transport Pilot Licence assessment. The ATPL is the main professional qualification behind airline missions, but earning it alone does not necessarily satisfy the Heavy Airliner checklist.
- Finish the earlier airline progression. Unlock the preceding airline specialisation and complete the required number of qualifying Career missions. If the tile specifies a minimum grade, reputation or pilot level, those conditions must also be met.
- Return to the Heavy Airliner item. Once every condition is ticked, the specialisation should become available. Buying a large jet does not bypass the progression chain.
Only qualifying Career Mode activity counts. Hours flown in Free Flight, landing challenges or other activities will not advance mission totals or airline specialisation requirements.
Is Heavy Airliner the same as the Jet Engine Rating or ATPL?
No. These qualifications control different parts of Career Mode, although all sit on the path towards heavy-airliner missions.

The Career label is also broader than a real aviation type rating. It does not certify you on one particular Airbus or Boeing cockpit, nor does it replace learning that aircraft's flight-management, autopilot and operating procedures.
Why is the Heavy Airliner rating still locked?
A locked rating usually means one condition has not been credited, even when the main licences appear complete.
- Check upstream branches: an instrument, engine, night or earlier airline requirement may still be incomplete.
- Check the mission category: only the airline missions named by the condition count; cargo, charter and Free Flight sectors do not substitute for them.
- Check the required grade: completing a mission may not count if the tile demands a particular minimum performance grade.
- Check the full mission result: finish the flight through its results screen so Career Mode can record the outcome.
- Separate access from availability: an unlocked specialisation does not guarantee that a suitable mission will appear at the selected location immediately. Clear map filters and inspect the relevant employee mission category.
If a completed condition has not refreshed, return to Career headquarters or restart the simulator while connected. Do not delete the cloud save or restart the entire career merely to refresh one tile.
Do you need Heavy Airliner access in Free Flight?
No. Career licences and specialisations do not restrict Free Flight. You can fly any installed heavy airliner available through your edition or add-ons without earning the Career rating.

What should you learn before heavy-airliner missions?
Heavy-airliner missions expose weak speed management, late descents and incorrect autopilot modes very quickly. Practise capturing altitude and controlling speed with the autopilot, then learn to prepare and load the route through the MSFS 2024 EFB before attempting longer airline sectors.
