Use our RTX 3070 settings for MSFS 2024 at 1080p, 1440p and 4K, with practical fixes for stutters, low FPS and 8 GB VRAM limits.
For an RTX 3070, the best Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 starting point is 1440p with DLSS Quality, High textures and clouds, Terrain LOD 120, Object LOD 100, medium shadows and reflections, and restrained traffic. Target a stable 30–45 fps; the card’s 8 GB VRAM makes Ultra textures and native 4K poor defaults.
Recommended RTX 3070 settings for MSFS 2024
At 2560 × 1440, use this custom profile instead of applying the Ultra preset and then trying to repair its performance. It preserves cockpit clarity and cloud quality while controlling the settings most likely to overload the RTX 3070.
| Setting | Recommended value | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Display resolution | 2560 × 1440 | The best balance of detail and GPU load for this card |
| Anti-aliasing/upscaling | DLSS Quality | Recovers GPU headroom without the softness of lower DLSS modes |
| Render scaling | 100 with TAA; leave at its normal value when DLSS controls resolution | Avoids accidentally combining DLSS with extra downscaling |
| Texture Resolution | High | Sharp enough for most aircraft while respecting 8 GB of VRAM |
| Anisotropic Filtering | 16x | Improves oblique runway and terrain textures at little cost |
| Terrain Level of Detail | 120 | Good draw distance without placing excessive load on the main thread |
| Objects Level of Detail | 100 | Keeps airport and city objects detailed without chasing distant geometry |
| Off-screen terrain pre-caching | High | Reduces visible reloads when looking around; use Medium if VRAM remains full |
| Volumetric Clouds | High | Most of the visual quality of Ultra with a useful GPU saving |
| Shadow maps and terrain shadows | Medium | Shadows become expensive at large airports and in detailed cockpits |
| Contact Shadows | Medium | Retains nearby depth without wasting GPU time on subtle detail |
| Ambient Occlusion | High | Adds useful cockpit depth and is worth retaining |
| Reflections | Medium | High and Ultra are costly around water, glass and wet surfaces |
| Ray-traced shadows | Off, if the option is shown | The RTX 3070 has ray-tracing hardware, but this is not an efficient use of it here |
| Water Waves | Medium | A sensible compromise for coastal and low-level flying |
| Windshield Effects | High | Maintains convincing rain and icing effects |
| Glass-cockpit refresh rate | Medium | Reduces CPU load in avionics-heavy aircraft |
| AI and airport traffic | Low to Medium | Use roughly 20–30 where percentage sliders are provided |
| V-Sync/frame limit | VRR or a sustainable 30–45 fps cap | Stable frame pacing feels better than repeated swings towards 60 fps |
This is a desktop RTX 3070 baseline. A laptop RTX 3070 may need Terrain LOD 100, Medium shadows and a 30 fps target because power limits and cooling vary substantially between machines. Processor speed also matters: the graphics card cannot compensate for a main-thread bottleneck at a crowded airport.
Which resolution and anti-aliasing mode should you use?
Use TAA at 1080p, DLSS Quality at 1440p and DLSS Balanced at 4K. DLSS Quality can work at 1080p when extra performance is essential, but fine cockpit text and distant power lines usually look clearer with native-resolution TAA.
| Output resolution | Starting mode | Recommended compromise |
|---|---|---|
| 1920 × 1080 | TAA at 100 render scale | High settings, with selective Ultra options if both CPU and GPU have headroom |
| 2560 × 1440 | DLSS Quality | Use the recommended profile above |
| 3840 × 2160 | DLSS Balanced | Terrain LOD 100, Medium shadows and reflections, and a stable 30 fps target |
Do not reduce render scaling as well as selecting a lower DLSS preset unless performance is still unacceptable. That double reduction is a common cause of blurry instruments. Our resolution-specific MSFS graphics recommendations cover the broader trade-offs between TAA, DLSS, render scaling and visual quality.
How should you tune these settings for your own flights?
Tune MSFS 2024 in the aircraft, weather and airport combination you actually use, not while cruising over empty countryside. A detailed airliner at a large airport beneath broken cloud is a much more useful stress test.
- Apply the 1440p baseline. Disable the Ultra preset’s expensive extras and begin with DLSS Quality.
- Repeat one demanding scenario. Keep the aircraft, gate, weather and camera position unchanged so comparisons mean something.
- Identify the bottleneck. The simulator’s developer performance display can report labels such as
Limited by GPUorLimited by MainThread. - Change one group at a time. Adjust GPU effects for a GPU limit, or traffic and LOD for a main-thread limit.
- Set a frame-rate target. Cap the result at a value the machine can hold during approach, taxi and camera movement rather than leaving it uncapped.
If performance still varies badly, use our bottleneck-led MSFS 2024 performance fixes to separate GPU load, processor limits, storage stalls and network-streaming problems.
What should you lower first when FPS drops?
Lower settings according to the active bottleneck; reducing everything together wastes image quality and may not fix the problem.
If MSFS 2024 is limited by the GPU
Disable ray-traced shadows first, then reduce clouds from Ultra to High and set shadows and reflections to Medium. If that is insufficient, change DLSS Quality to Balanced; at 1080p with TAA, reduce render scaling in small steps rather than making one large cut.
Texture Resolution is different: lowering it may not raise average FPS much, but it can remove severe stutters when dedicated GPU memory is exhausted. Keep High unless VRAM use or repeated texture swapping points to a memory problem.
If MSFS 2024 is limited by the main thread
Reduce AI aircraft, airport ground traffic and Terrain LOD before sacrificing clouds or texture resolution. Move Terrain LOD from 120 to 100, and then to 80 if a large hub is still CPU-bound; Object LOD can follow from 100 to 80.
Glass-cockpit refresh rate also matters in avionics-heavy aircraft. Our explanation of how scenery controls affect FPS and VRAM covers the separate costs of terrain detail, object density, shadows and reflections.
Why does an RTX 3070 stutter despite showing acceptable FPS?
On this card, persistent stutters commonly come from exhausted 8 GB VRAM, a main-thread spike or scenery streaming rather than low average GPU performance. Each cause needs a different fix.
- Stuttering after loading a complex aircraft or airport: change Texture Resolution from High to Medium, keep ray-traced effects off and close other hardware-accelerated applications using dedicated GPU memory.
- Stuttering only at major airports: reduce traffic, Terrain LOD and glass-cockpit refresh rate. This is usually a processor-side problem.
- Pauses when panning the camera: keep off-screen terrain pre-caching at High if memory allows. Low pre-caching can save memory but forces more scenery to reload as the view changes.
- Late or blurry streamed scenery: check bandwidth and asset streaming separately. Lowering shadow quality will not repair a network or cache problem.
A mistake we see constantly is selecting Ultra Texture Resolution because the average FPS appears unchanged. VRAM pressure often shows up later as hitching, texture replacement or degradation after moving into a detailed area. If memory does not recover cleanly after a major texture change, reload the flight or restart the simulator before judging the result.
Can an RTX 3070 run MSFS 2024 at 4K?
An RTX 3070 can drive a 4K display, but DLSS Balanced and a 30 fps target are the sensible choices for demanding aircraft and airports. Native 4K, Ultra clouds, high reflections and maximum LOD together are unrealistic defaults for its performance and 8 GB memory capacity.
Try DLSS Quality only for lighter aircraft or less demanding scenery. A 4K display does not require native internal rendering: DLSS can produce a 4K output while rendering at a lower resolution, which is the practical way to use this GPU.
Does the RTX 3070 support frame generation?
The RTX 3070 does not support NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation; an absent or disabled option is expected because NVIDIA’s implementation requires newer RTX hardware. If MSFS 2024 offers another compatible frame-generation method, begin with at least a genuine, stable 30 fps and expect possible artefacts around glass displays, propellers and moving scenery.
Frame generation cannot fix exhausted VRAM or main-thread hitching. Keep driver antialiasing application-controlled and avoid stacking driver sharpening over DLSS; our recommended NVIDIA profile settings for MSFS explain the useful power, latency, V-Sync and frame-limit choices without overriding the simulator unnecessarily.
