Use the best MSFS 2024 RTX 4080 graphics settings for 1440p and 4K, including DLSS, Frame Generation, LOD, clouds and airport stutter fixes.
For an RTX 4080, run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 at 1440p with DLAA and mostly Ultra settings, or at 4K with DLSS Quality, Ultra textures and High or Ultra clouds. Enable Frame Generation for smoothness, but cure airport stutters by reducing Terrain LOD, Object LOD and CPU-heavy traffic before lowering texture quality.
Recommended RTX 4080 settings for 1440p and 4K
For a conventional monitor, the profile below provides a strong balance between cockpit clarity, scenery detail and stable performance. Setting names can shift slightly between simulator updates, but the underlying controls remain the same.
| Setting | 2560×1440 | 3840×2160 |
|---|---|---|
| Display resolution | Native | Native |
| Anti-aliasing or upscaling | DLAA | DLSS Quality |
| Render scaling | 100 | 100 |
| Frame Generation | Off while tuning; On afterwards | Off while tuning; On afterwards |
| Terrain Level of Detail | 200; reduce to 100–150 at demanding hubs | 150–200; reduce to 100–150 at demanding hubs |
| Objects Level of Detail | 150 | 100–150 |
| Texture Resolution | Ultra | Ultra |
| Anisotropic Filtering | 16x | 16x |
| Volumetric Clouds | Ultra | High; use Ultra with GPU headroom |
| Buildings, trees, grass and bushes | High–Ultra | High |
| Shadow maps and contact shadows | High | High |
| Ambient occlusion and reflections | High–Ultra | High |
| Water waves | High | High |
| Glass-cockpit refresh rate | High | Medium–High |
| Road, airport and fauna traffic | Low–Medium | Low–Medium |
| Motion blur and depth of field | Off or personal preference | Off or personal preference |
At 3440×1440, begin with the 1440p column and switch from DLAA to DLSS Quality if GPU load remains too high. Triple-screen and very wide configurations should start closer to the 4K profile because their combined pixel count changes the workload substantially.
These recommendations are for monitor play. VR needs a separate per-eye resolution and reprojection tune; Frame Generation is not a substitute for VR motion reprojection.
Should an RTX 4080 use DLAA or DLSS Quality?
Use DLAA at 1440p for the clearest instruments and least shimmer, while DLSS Quality at 4K provides the better balance of detail and GPU performance. At 1440p, upscaling often brings little benefit when the simulator is already limited by the CPU.
DLSS Balanced is useful for triple-screen flying, dense weather or 4K situations where Quality cannot maintain the required base frame rate. Performance mode usually makes glass displays, power lines and distant buildings too soft unless the output resolution is exceptionally high. Our comparison of MSFS 2024 DLSS modes explains when each option makes sense.
Should Frame Generation be enabled?
Enable Frame Generation when the simulator already sustains roughly 40 frames per second or more before generated frames are added. It makes camera movement noticeably smoother on high-refresh displays, but it cannot repair a heavily CPU-limited 25 fps base rate.
Frame Generation does not speed up the flight model, MainThread or control response. Low base performance can therefore look fluid while still feeling delayed, and fast-moving cockpit edges may show generated-frame artefacts. RTX 40-series Frame Generation also requires the relevant Windows graphics scheduling option; follow our Frame Generation setup and troubleshooting steps if the control is unavailable.
Leave V-Sync and frame caps off during initial testing so they do not conceal the bottleneck. Once tuning is complete, use one synchronisation or frame-limit method suited to the monitor rather than stacking several overrides. Our recommended NVIDIA profile for MSFS covers frame limits, V-Sync and driver settings without overriding the simulator unnecessarily.
Why does MSFS 2024 still stutter with an RTX 4080?
An RTX 4080 can still stutter because busy airports, traffic and high LOD settings often overload the CPU rather than the graphics card. The simulator’s frame-rate display helps distinguish a MainThread limit from a GPU limit.
- Limited by MainThread: Reduce Terrain LOD first, then Objects LOD, traffic density and glass-cockpit refresh rate. Setting Terrain LOD to 400 around a large airport is a common cause of poor frame pacing, regardless of GPU power.
- Limited by GPU: Lower volumetric clouds from Ultra to High, followed by reflections, ambient occlusion and shadow quality. Keep textures at Ultra unless memory pressure or add-on scenery produces persistent hitching.
- Performance barely changes between 1440p and 4K: This strongly suggests a CPU or traffic bottleneck. Reducing resolution or selecting a more aggressive DLSS mode will not solve it.
- Pauses coincide with missing or late scenery: Check storage, scenery streaming and network behaviour. A graphics preset cannot correct a streaming stall.
- Stutters appear only at one detailed airport: Test Texture Resolution at High and reduce Objects LOD. Complex scenery can consume far more memory and draw-call capacity than the default world.
For a closer look at which controls affect the CPU, GPU, memory and scenery streaming, see our breakdown of MSFS 2024 scenery settings and FPS impact.
How should the RTX 4080 settings be tuned?
Tune the simulator in a demanding repeatable scenario, not while cruising over empty terrain where almost every configuration appears fast.
- Apply the table’s baseline: Use native resolution, turn off Frame Generation and leave V-Sync or external frame caps disabled temporarily.
- Load a demanding flight: Use a complex glass-cockpit aircraft at a major airport with live or dense weather. Test taxiing and cockpit panning, not just a stationary external view.
- Identify the limiter: If MainThread-limited, lower Terrain LOD in steps of 25–50 before touching textures. Then adjust Objects LOD, traffic and cockpit refresh rate.
- Reduce GPU-heavy effects: If GPU-limited, change clouds from Ultra to High, then lower reflections, ambient occlusion and shadows. Switch DLAA to DLSS Quality only when more GPU headroom is still needed.
- Enable Frame Generation: Turn it on only after the underlying frame rate and frame pacing are acceptable. Then configure one frame cap or synchronisation method for the display.
- Retest at night and in heavy cloud: Lighting, reflections and volumetric weather can expose a GPU limit that was absent during a clear daytime test.
Do these settings also work for an RTX 4080 Super?
Use the same MSFS 2024 profile for an RTX 4080 Super. Its extra GPU headroom can support DLAA, Ultra clouds or higher reflection quality more consistently, but raising Terrain LOD will still depend chiefly on the processor and the complexity of the airport, aircraft and traffic.
