Use these MSFS 2024 RTX 3080 settings for 1080p, 1440p and 4K, with clear DLSS, LOD, texture, VRAM and stutter guidance.
For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on a desktop RTX 3080, start at 1440p with DLSS Quality, High textures and clouds, Terrain LOD 150, Object LOD 100, 16x anisotropic filtering, High shadows and Medium reflections. At 4K use DLSS Balanced; at 1080p use TAA at 100 render scale. NVIDIA Frame Generation is unavailable.
Recommended RTX 3080 settings for MSFS 2024
These settings provide a balanced starting point rather than chasing the Ultra preset. They assume a desktop RTX 3080; laptop versions have widely varying power limits and may need lower clouds, shadows and resolution.

|---|---|---|---|
| Anti-aliasing | TAA | DLSS Quality | DLSS Balanced |
| Render scaling with TAA | 100 | 100 if using TAA | Not recommended over DLSS |
| Texture Resolution | High; Ultra on 12 GB cards | High; Ultra on 12 GB cards | High |
| Terrain Level of Detail | 150 | 150 | 120–150 |
| Objects Level of Detail | 100 | 100 | 100 |
| Volumetric Clouds | High | High | High |
| Buildings, trees and grass | High | High | High |
| Anisotropic Filtering | 16x | 16x | 16x |
| Shadow Maps | High | High | Medium or High |
| Contact Shadows | High | High | Medium |
| Ambient Occlusion | High | High | Medium |
| Reflections | Medium | Medium | Medium |
| Windshield Effects | High | High | High |
| Offscreen Terrain Pre-Caching | High | High | High |
| Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate | Medium | Medium | Medium |
| Motion Blur | Off | Off | Off |
| Raytraced Shadows, if shown | Off | Off | Off |
Keep AI or live traffic and airport activity moderate because these can burden the CPU even when the RTX 3080 has spare capacity. Our resolution-by-resolution explanation of MSFS graphics options covers the broader trade-offs behind each setting.
Should an RTX 3080 use TAA or DLSS in MSFS 2024?
Use TAA at 1080p, DLSS Quality at 1440p and DLSS Balanced at 4K as the practical defaults. TAA produces clearer cockpit labels and glass displays, while DLSS reduces the GPU workload at higher resolutions.
At 1440p, switch back to TAA at 100 render scale if the frame rate remains stable in dense airports and bad weather. At 4K, try DLSS Quality if cockpit clarity matters more than maximum performance; return to Balanced when clouds or complex airports make the GPU frame time too high. Avoid DLSS Performance below 4K because instruments and distant detail become noticeably softer.
The RTX 3080 supports DLSS Super Resolution but not NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation. Settings copied from RTX 40- or 50-series guides can therefore produce unrealistic performance expectations.
Do 10 GB and 12 GB RTX 3080 cards need different settings?
Yes—the 10 GB card should normally use High textures, while the 12 GB model has more room for Ultra textures and a larger offscreen scenery cache. Texture quality has little effect on average frame rate until VRAM fills, after which camera turns and approaches into detailed airports may produce sharp stutters.
On a 10 GB card, reduce Texture Resolution and Offscreen Terrain Pre-Caching by one step before sacrificing clouds or resolution if monitoring shows VRAM exhaustion. The symptoms can overlap with scenery streaming pauses, so do not assume every stutter is a GPU problem. We explain the distinction in our guide to scenery settings, texture quality and VRAM pressure.
What should I lower first when MSFS 2024 loses FPS?
Lower settings according to the actual bottleneck: clouds and shadows for a GPU limit, but LOD, traffic and cockpit refresh rate for a MainThread limit. The built-in frame-time display is more useful than changing settings at random.
| Observed problem | Likely constraint | Change first |
|---|---|---|
| GPU frame time is higher | RTX 3080 rendering load | Use a faster DLSS mode, then lower clouds, shadows and ambient occlusion |
| MainThread frame time is higher | CPU or simulation load | Reduce Terrain LOD towards 100, then Object LOD, traffic and cockpit refresh rate |
| Stutters appear while turning the camera | VRAM, scenery caching or an add-on | Use High textures, reduce offscreen caching one step and test without heavy add-ons |
| Frame rate swings despite acceptable image quality | Uneven frame pacing | Cap the frame rate to a value the system can sustain at a demanding airport |
A common mistake is reducing texture quality to fix a MainThread limitation; it will not address the CPU workload. For a fuller diagnosis, follow our MSFS 2024 frame-rate and performance troubleshooting steps.
How should these settings be tested?
Test at the busiest location and in the most complex aircraft you regularly use, not at cruise altitude where almost any configuration looks successful.
- Apply the table settings and restart the flight so the comparison begins from a clean baseline.
- Use one repeatable scenario with the same aircraft, airport, weather and cockpit view.
- Check the frame-time limit before changing anything: GPU and MainThread problems need different fixes.
- Change one setting group at a time, then repeat the same taxi, take-off or approach.
- Set a sustainable frame cap based on the demanding scenario rather than the highest number seen in light conditions.
