Best RTX 5080 settings for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020?
Use the best RTX 5080 settings for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, with 4K, DLSS, frame generation, LOD, traffic and stutter fixes.
For an RTX 5080 in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, start with DirectX 12, native 4K or DLSS Quality, DLSS Frame Generation on, Ultra textures and clouds, Terrain Level of Detail at 150–200, Objects Level of Detail at 150, and Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate on High. Reduce traffic and LOD first when MainThread-limited.
Recommended RTX 5080 settings for MSFS 2020
For a 4K monitor, this Custom preset delivers strong image quality without wasting performance on CPU-heavy sliders that an RTX 5080 cannot accelerate.
| Setting | Recommended value | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Display resolution | Native monitor resolution | Keep Windows and MSFS at the same resolution. |
| DirectX version | DirectX 12 | Required for Frame Generation. Restart the simulator after changing it. |
| Anti-aliasing | DLSS Quality at 4K | Use TAA with 100 render scaling if native 4K runs smoothly and maximum cockpit-display clarity matters. |
| Render scaling | 100 with TAA | DLSS controls its own internal resolution, so do not also reduce render scaling unnecessarily. |
| DLSS Frame Generation | On for monitor use | Disable it when diagnosing latency, artefacts or uneven frame pacing. Leave it off for VR. |
| NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency | On | On + Boost is normally unnecessary unless testing shows a benefit. |
| Terrain Level of Detail | 150–200 | Use 100–150 at dense airports or when limited by MainThread. |
| Objects Level of Detail | 150 | Reduce to 100 in complex city scenery. |
| Offscreen Terrain Pre-Caching | Ultra | Helps prevent visible scenery loading while panning. Reduce one step if memory pressure appears. |
| Texture Resolution | Ultra | Lower only if a complex aircraft and airport combination exhausts graphics memory. |
| Anisotropic Filtering | 16x | Its cost on an RTX 5080 is small. |
| Volumetric Clouds | Ultra | High is the first sensible reduction in heavy weather when GPU-limited. |
| Shadows and reflections | Shadow Maps 2048, Terrain Shadows 1024, Contact Shadows Ultra, Ambient Occlusion Ultra, Raymarched Reflections High | Reduce reflections and shadow maps before texture quality. |
| Water Waves | High | Ultra offers little benefit from normal cockpit viewing distances. |
| Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate | High | Use Medium in avionics-heavy airliners when MainThread-limited. |
| Traffic | One traffic source; low ground-aircraft density and moderate road, ship and airport traffic | Traffic is primarily a CPU load. Do not combine dense simulator AI with another traffic injector. |
| V-Sync | Off with a variable-refresh display | Without variable refresh, use V-Sync or a stable frame cap to prevent tearing. |
These are starting values rather than a promise of one frame rate: processor speed, aircraft systems, airport scenery and traffic can matter more than the graphics card. Our visual-cost breakdown of the main MSFS graphics options explains which effects are safe to raise or lower individually.
Should you use TAA or DLSS Quality?
Use TAA at 1440p for the cleanest instruments, and begin with DLSS Quality at 4K or on a high-resolution ultrawide monitor.
MSFS 2020 can show softness or ghosting on glass-cockpit displays with aggressive DLSS modes. If the GPU has sufficient headroom, compare DLSS Quality against TAA at 100 render scaling from the same aircraft and viewpoint. Avoid DLSS Performance unless the output resolution or target refresh rate genuinely requires it.
Should DLSS Frame Generation be enabled on an RTX 5080?
Yes, enable Frame Generation for normal monitor flying once the simulator already has a stable base frame rate.
- Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows, then restart the computer.
- Select DirectX 12 in MSFS 2020 and restart the simulator.
- Turn on Frame Generation and NVIDIA Reflex in the graphics options.
- Test without a frame cap first, then set a cap that keeps output below the monitor's refresh ceiling if frame pacing requires it.
If the option remains unavailable, check the driver, DX12 and Windows scheduling requirements in our Frame Generation setup and greyed-out-toggle checks.
Frame Generation adds displayed frames; it does not speed up the flight model, remove MainThread stalls or improve a very low base frame rate. The simulator may also show a standard Frame Generation switch rather than 2x, 3x or 4x controls. Any RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation override depends on the NVIDIA driver profile, so establish a stable in-simulator configuration before experimenting with it.
Why can an RTX 5080 still be limited by MainThread?
MSFS 2020 is frequently limited by one busy CPU thread, especially at large airports with an advanced airliner and dense traffic.
Enable Developer Mode and its Display FPS overlay. If it reports Limited by MainThread, lowering DLSS quality, textures or clouds will not solve the bottleneck. Reduce these settings in order:
- Traffic: lower AI aircraft, parked aircraft, road vehicles, airport vehicles, ships and ferries.
- Terrain Level of Detail: move from 200 towards 150, then 100 if required.
- Objects Level of Detail: reduce 150 to 100 around detailed cities and airports.
- Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate: change High to Medium in avionics-heavy aircraft.
Use our method for separating a CPU MainThread limit from a GPU limit before reducing image quality.
What should you lower when limited by GPU?
When the overlay reports a GPU limit, reduce internal resolution before sacrificing texture detail.
Change native TAA to DLSS Quality, then move Volumetric Clouds from Ultra to High. Raymarched Reflections and Shadow Maps are the next settings to reduce. Keep Texture Resolution on Ultra unless graphics-memory use is causing pauses or missing textures.
Why can MSFS 2020 still stutter with an RTX 5080?
Stutters on this card usually come from frame pacing, scenery loading, traffic, online data or add-ons rather than insufficient rendering power.
- Test a demanding location with an empty Community folder. A scenery conflict or background utility can produce pauses that resemble a GPU problem.
- Use only one traffic source. Dense aircraft models and airport activity can overwhelm the MainThread.
- Temporarily disable photogrammetry. If the pauses disappear, investigate bandwidth, server delivery or rolling-cache behaviour.
- Watch the base frame rate with Frame Generation off. Generated frames cannot conceal severe CPU spikes.
- Use a stable frame cap. A consistent 60 or 90 fps often feels better than an output rate that repeatedly crosses the display's refresh limit.
Persistent pauses need diagnosis rather than lower settings across the board; follow our MSFS stutter troubleshooting sequence to isolate cache, add-on, traffic and frame-time problems.
