What is the best airport to start MSFS 2024 Career Mode?

Ian Stephens
In short

Find the best airport to start MSFS 2024 Career Mode, why KCHD is our top pick, plus safer alternatives and costly airport-choice mistakes.

For most players, Chandler Municipal Airport (KCHD) in Arizona is the best place to start an MSFS 2024 Career Mode save. It has long paved runways, flat terrain, usually manageable weather and plenty of nearby airports, giving early light-aircraft missions fewer ways to fail than mountain, island or major-hub starts.

Why is KCHD the best MSFS 2024 Career Mode start?

Chandler Municipal offers the right balance between a tiny airfield and a complicated international airport. Its two parallel paved runways are roughly 1,300 to 1,500 metres long, providing generous margins for the light aeroplanes used during early training, certification flights and employee missions.

The surrounding Phoenix basin is mostly flat, with clear visual references and numerous airports within short flying distance. That gives the mission system plenty of plausible routes without forcing every departure through steep terrain or across open water.

KCHD is not perfect. Controlled airspace requires attention, while hot conditions can reduce climb performance and increase take-off distance. The runway length and lack of immediate terrain make those problems much easier to manage than at a short desert strip.

What should a Career Mode starting airport have?

The safest starting airport is a medium-sized general aviation field with straightforward approaches and several nearby destinations. We recommend looking for:

  • A paved runway of at least 1,200 metres: this is not a strict requirement, but it gives a new pilot room to recover from floating, late touchdowns and poor braking.
  • Flat terrain under both approaches: avoid valleys, cliff-top airports and runways requiring steep turns close to the ground.
  • Several nearby airports: a dense regional network supports more useful short sectors than an isolated island or remote strip.
  • Simple taxi routes: complex hubs create long taxi times and more chances of receiving hold-short, runway-incursion or incorrect-parking penalties.
  • Reasonably forgiving weather: no location guarantees calm conditions, but dry inland regions generally produce fewer low-cloud and visibility problems.
  • Reliable parking positions: badly placed ramps, buildings and scenery objects can make an otherwise suitable airport unusable for Career missions.

Airport familiarity also matters. A local field that meets these conditions may be a better choice than KCHD if you already know its runway layout, circuit direction and surrounding landmarks. Our practical advice for avoiding early Career Mode penalties covers the other decisions that have more effect on progression.

Which starting airports are good alternatives?

Players who want to begin outside North America still have several forgiving options.

AirportWhy choose itMain drawback
Chandler Municipal (KCHD)Flat terrain, substantial paved runways and a dense Arizona airport networkHot weather and controlled Phoenix-area airspace
Moorabbin (YMMB)Multiple paved runways, flat approaches and many airports around MelbourneRunway choice and taxi instructions require attention
Münster Osnabrück (EDDG)Long runway, gentle terrain and dense coverage across western EuropeLow cloud, rain and crosswinds can complicate early jobs
A familiar regional airportKnown taxiways, landmarks and procedures reduce pilot errorsOnly suitable if it has adequate runways and nearby destinations

Honolulu, Innsbruck and Queenstown are enjoyable flying bases, but water, terrain or demanding approaches make them weaker choices for a first Career save. They become more attractive once basic certifications are complete; our comparison of MSFS 2024 airports and route ideas explains where each type of base works best.

Does the starting airport affect Career Mode progression?

Your starting airport influences the opening flights and the region in which early opportunities appear, but it does not provide a permanent credit bonus or change the certification tree. Mission type, distance, specialisation and flight performance matter far more to earnings.

You are not locked to the original region. The Career map allows the pilot to transfer and open operations elsewhere, although repositioning an owned aircraft can cost credits. That means an established save is rarely worth resetting solely because another airport looks better. Our explanation of Career Mode progression and regional missions covers how that expansion works.

How can you avoid a bad airport start?

A quick Free Flight check catches most airport problems before they become Career Mode problems.

  1. Load the airport in a light default aircraft. Use a parking position rather than starting on the runway.
  2. Taxi to the runway. Check for blocked taxiways, misplaced buildings, sharp elevation changes and confusing intersections.
  3. Fly one circuit. Confirm that both approach paths are clear and that the runway provides enough stopping distance.
  4. Retest without conflicting scenery. If an aircraft spawns inside an object or the taxiway is obstructed, disable the relevant airport package and check the default version.

If the opening flights are impossible because of scenery faults, restart early at a nearby airport rather than investing hours in that save. If the map merely shows few missions, complete the introductory objectives and check your certifications before blaming the airport; mission availability expands with Career Mode progression.
