See which Boeing 737 MAX add-ons work in X-Plane 12, how to spot repaints and conversions, and why the Zibo 737-800X is not a MAX.
X-Plane 12 has no widely established, study-level Boeing 737 MAX add-on comparable with its mature 737NG aircraft. Most downloads labelled “MAX” are community conversions, visual models or liveries inherited from X-Plane 11. Verify native X-Plane 12 support carefully: the Zibo 737-800X is an excellent 737NG, but it is not a MAX.
Which 737 MAX add-ons are actually available?
The available choices fall into several very different categories, and only a dedicated aircraft can reproduce a MAX beyond its appearance.

Some users encounter legacy freeware MAX 8 packages associated with MAX Team Design or derivatives of that work. Treat the original packages as X-Plane 11-era aircraft. Any XP12 repack or patch needs its own clear documentation, compatible plugins and change log; an “XP12” label alone does not prove a complete conversion.
A repaint can be even easier to misidentify. For example, this GOL MAX 8 livery is marked for X-Plane 11. It requires its intended base aircraft and does not supply a working X-Plane 12 MAX by itself.
Is the Zibo 737-800X a Boeing 737 MAX?
No—the Zibo 737-800X models the Boeing 737-800 Next Generation, not the 737 MAX 8. The default Laminar Research 737-800 is also an NG aircraft.
A credible MAX simulation needs more than MAX-style engines and split-tip winglets. Look for the correct LEAP-1B performance, MAX cockpit displays, weights, aerodynamics, flight-control logic and dimensions for the stated variant. A MAX 8 repaint cannot turn a 737-800 into a MAX 9 or MAX 10; our explanation of the differences between MAX variants shows why the airframes are not interchangeable.

How can I check whether a MAX download works in X-Plane 12?
Require explicit X-Plane 12 support and identify exactly what the download changes before installing it.
- Check the stated simulator version. “Built for X-Plane 11”, “opens in X-Plane 12” and “native X-Plane 12 aircraft” are not equivalent claims.
- Identify the required base aircraft. A livery or visual conversion may need a particular release of the default 737, Zibo 737-800X or another community aircraft.
- Confirm the scope. Texture files indicate a repaint; replacement objects usually indicate a visual mod. A complete aircraft should also contain its own
.acffile and any required systems or plugin components. - Check platform-specific plugins. An aircraft can appear in the menu while its cockpit plugin has failed. Black displays, dead controls and an unusable FMC commonly point to incompatible or missing plugin files.
- Install it separately. Keep each aircraft in its own folder under
X-Plane 12/Aircraft/and retain the original archive. If loading fails, remove the package and inspectLog.txtin the X-Plane folder for missing objects, datarefs or plugin errors.
Merely opening an XP11 aircraft in Plane Maker and saving it does not create a native XP12 conversion. The aircraft may load while retaining incorrect engine behaviour, lighting, sounds, systems or flight-model data.
What should I fly instead of a 737 MAX?
For reliable 737 operations in X-Plane 12, choose a well-supported 737NG unless MAX-specific systems and performance are essential.
- Zibo 737-800X: the strongest freeware choice for detailed 737NG procedures. Use a release intended for X-Plane 12.
- Default 737-800: suitable for simpler flying and as the base required by some liveries or visual modifications.
- 737-800/BBJ2: our XP12-compatible 737-800 and BBJ2 package offers another NG configuration, but it should not be mistaken for a MAX.
If visual resemblance is all you need, a clearly documented community conversion may be enough. For systems training or accurate performance, accept only a package that identifies its MAX variant, models the MAX-specific changes and explicitly supports X-Plane 12.
