Why do my brakes stay on in a flight simulator?

Brakes that stay on in a flight simulator are usually caused by an engaged parking brake, a reversed or badly calibrated toe-brake axis, or duplicate controller bindings. Release the parking brake, inspect live brake-axis input, remove duplicate assignments, calibrate the pedals, then test with assistance features and aircraft-specific ground equipment disabled.

This general fix applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX, Prepar3D, DCS and most other flight simulators. Menu labels differ, but the fault is normally either a brake command being held or an axis reporting pressure while physically released.

How do I release brakes that are stuck on?

Work through these checks in order, because changing sensitivity before finding the offending input often hides rather than fixes the fault.

  1. Release the parking brake once. Use the cockpit lever or the assigned command, then confirm that the lever and any brake warning disappear. Check that a keyboard key, controller button or maintained hardware switch is not continuing to send the command.
  2. Disconnect optional controllers. Temporarily unplug pedals, gamepads, throttles and button boxes, leaving only the controls needed for the test. If the brakes release, reconnect one device at a time to identify the source.
  3. Search every controller profile. Inspect assignments for parking brake, brakes, left brake and right brake on every connected device. Remove unintended duplicates, especially a brake command assigned to a yoke, throttle lever or gamepad trigger.   4. Check both toe-brake axes. With your feet off the pedals, each brake must indicate fully released. If an axis shows full braking at rest and releases when pressed, reverse that brake axis only; do not reverse the rudder axis.
  5. Calibrate and add a small dead zone. A noisy axis can send a few per cent of braking continuously. On a PC, first test and calibrate the toe brakes in Windows, then calibrate them in the simulator or device software if that option exists. Use only enough dead zone to produce a stable released value.
  6. Test a default aircraft. Remove wheel chocks, disable ground-handling or piloting assistance temporarily, and load a standard aircraft with a known controller profile. If only one add-on aircraft remains affected, inspect its tablet, ground-services panel and custom parking-brake controls.

How can I tell what is applying the brakes?

The brake indication and the moment at which braking begins usually reveal the cause.

A common mistake is assigning separate left and right toe brakes while leaving a combined brake command on the same pedals. Another is editing an inactive controller or aircraft profile, so the apparent correction has no effect.

Why do the brakes return after I release them?

A physical switch or noisy axis can immediately overwrite the brake position selected in the cockpit.

Use a momentary button with a toggle-style parking-brake command. If your hardware has a maintained parking-brake lever, use explicit on and off commands when the simulator supports them. A maintained switch bound to a toggle command can become out of step with the cockpit lever.

If toe-brake input flickers near the released end, recalibrate it and add a small dead zone. Large dead zones are not a cure for reversed polarity or duplicate bindings and will reduce usable braking range.

What if the aircraft still will not taxi?

If the brake indicators show released and the wheels are not being held, the problem may not be the brakes.

  • Remove chocks, tie-downs and any attached pushback tug through the aircraft or ground-services controls.
  • Confirm that the engines or propeller are producing thrust and that the simulation is not paused or in slew mode.
  • Check for an aircraft-specific failure, custom parking-brake system or saved panel state.
  • If braking starts only after landing, inspect the autobrake, spoilers, anti-skid and pedal inputs. An armed autobrake is different from a parking brake.
