Learn how to take screenshots in any flight simulator on PC, Xbox or PS5, find saved images, hide the HUD and fix black or washed-out captures.
To take screenshots in a flight simulator, frame the view, hide any unwanted HUD or labels, then use the simulator’s screenshot command or your platform’s capture control. On Windows, Windows key + Print Screen is the simplest universal shortcut; Steam users can normally press F12. Check the capture tool’s save folder afterwards.
Which screenshot shortcut should I use?
The best shortcut depends on whether the simulator, operating system or gaming platform is handling the capture.
| Platform or simulator | Default capture method | Where the image goes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows key + Print Screen | Usually Pictures\Screenshots |
| Windows Game Bar | Windows key + Alt + Print Screen | Usually Videos\Captures |
| Steam | F12 with its overlay enabled | Steam’s screenshot manager and its associated folder |
| macOS | Shift + Command + 3 for the screen or Shift + Command + 4 for a selection | The Desktop by default, unless changed |
| FSX or Prepar3D | V when the default screenshot assignment is retained | The simulator’s folder under Pictures; the exact name varies by product and version |
| X-Plane | Shift + Space with default controls | The X-Plane Output folder |
| DCS | Print Screen with default controls | The DCS screenshots folder under Windows Saved Games |
| Xbox Series X|S | Press the controller’s Share button; older pads can use the Xbox button followed by Y | The console capture gallery |
| PlayStation 5 | Press the Create button and take a screenshot | The PS5 Media Gallery |
Pressing Print Screen by itself on Windows often copies the image only to the clipboard. It does not necessarily create a file; paste it into an image editor and save it before copying anything else.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 players on PC can use Windows or Steam capture controls after positioning the Showcase camera. On console, use the system capture button. Our Microsoft Flight Simulator screenshot instructions cover its camera and capture workflow in more detail. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is not available on PlayStation; the PS5 and PS5 Pro instructions apply to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
How do I take a clean screenshot without the HUD?
A clean simulator screenshot requires the camera, interface and output resolution to be prepared before pressing the capture key.
- Choose the camera. Use an external, drone, free or showcase camera where available. For cockpit photographs, adjust the seat position rather than using extreme zoom, which can distort the panel.
- Remove interface clutter. Hide menus, assistance markers, nameplates, control hints and toolbar panels. An aircraft’s projected HUD is part of its avionics rather than a simulator overlay; our guide to flight-simulator HUD controls explains that distinction.
- Set the output quality. Run at the display’s native resolution and use a sensible render scale. A normal screen capture cannot contain more real detail than the image being presented on the monitor.
- Freeze the scene carefully. Use a camera or photo mode if the simulator provides one. Opening an ordinary pause menu may leave text or panels across the image, while some pause modes stop the aircraft without freezing traffic, clouds or propeller animation.
- Capture the frame. Use one method from the table and wait briefly before taking another image. Laptop users may need the
Fnkey if the function row or Print Screen key has a secondary purpose. - Inspect the original file. Check focus, exposure, UI elements and aircraft position before changing the scene. Keep the original PNG or BMP until editing is finished.
For aircraft thumbnails, leave enough space around the aeroplane for cropping and avoid placing the nose, tail or wingtip against the edge. Our FSX screenshot framing and thumbnail preparation tutorial demonstrates the practical composition issues.
Where are flight simulator screenshots saved?
Screenshots are saved by whichever tool captured them, so the simulator’s folder is not always the right place to look.
- Windows key captures normally appear under
Pictures\Screenshots, although cloud synchronisation or a relocated Pictures library can change that path. - Game Bar captures normally appear under
Videos\Captures. - Steam captures should be opened through its screenshot manager, which can reveal the corresponding disk folder.
- Native simulator captures may go into the simulator installation, an
Outputdirectory, Pictures or Saved Games. - Console captures appear in the Xbox capture gallery or PS5 Media Gallery rather than inside the simulator.
Search by the capture time and look for .png, .jpg.bmp files if the folder is unclear. FSX’s native screenshots are commonly BMP files, so they can be much larger than an equivalent PNG or JPEG.
Why is my screenshot black, blurry or washed out?
Black, soft or incorrectly coloured captures usually come from the capture method, HDR handling or the simulator’s rendered output rather than the camera itself.
- No file appears: Check whether the shortcut copied to the clipboard instead of saving a file. For
F12, confirm that Steam’s overlay is enabled and that the simulator has not reassigned the key. - The image is black: Switch from exclusive full-screen to borderless or windowed mode, then use the operating system’s gaming capture tool or the simulator’s native command. Avoid running several capture overlays at once.
- Colours look washed out: HDR screenshots can be displayed or converted with the wrong tone mapping. Capture with an HDR-aware method, or temporarily use SDR when the final image is intended for an ordinary web page.
- The image is blurry: Pause camera movement, reduce motion blur and check render scaling. Upscaling can soften fine cockpit text even when the saved image has the monitor’s full pixel dimensions.
- The HUD or cursor remains: Close toolbar panels, move the pointer off-screen and allow auto-hiding controls to disappear before capturing.
- A VR capture is oddly cropped: Desktop captures often record the headset mirror, which may show one eye or a distorted frame. Use the simulator’s 2D camera for a conventional photograph, or adjust the mirror window before capturing it.
