Fix brakes stuck on in FSX by checking the parking brake, reversed toe-brake axes, duplicate controller bindings and Windows calibration.
In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, brakes usually stay on because the parking brake is engaged, a toe-brake axis is reversed, or another controller has a duplicate brake assignment. Release the parking brake, then inspect every connected controller’s brake axes, reverse their direction if necessary, and recalibrate pedals that do not return cleanly.
Fix FSX brakes stuck on in this order
The fastest diagnosis is to remove parking-brake and controller input before changing aircraft files or resetting FSX.
- Release the parking brake. With the default keyboard assignments, pressing the full-stop or period key
.releases the parking brake and applies the normal wheel brakes while pressed.Ctrl+.sets the parking brake, so do not use that combination to release it. You can also move the cockpit parking-brake handle to its released position. - Test without controller input. Temporarily disable controllers in FSX, or close the simulator, disconnect non-essential controllers and relaunch it. If the aircraft now rolls, a controller axis, button or unstable hardware input is applying the brakes.
- Check every connected device. Open Settings, then Controls and the control-axes section. Select each entry in the Controller Type list, including the yoke, joystick, throttle and gamepad. Remove
Left Brake AxisandRight Brake Axisfrom everything except the toe pedals intended to control them. - Reverse both toe-brake axes if required. If the aircraft rolls only while you press the pedals, the axes are backwards. Enable the Reverse option for both left and right brake axes, then test again.
- Remove duplicate button commands. Check the buttons and keys section for normal brakes and parking-brake assignments. A held button, noisy switch or duplicated command can override correctly configured pedal axes.
- Try a default FSX aircraft. Load a standard aircraft on a runway with the parking brake released. If it moves normally, the remaining problem belongs to the add-on aircraft rather than FSX’s global controls.

Which symptom identifies the brake fault?
How the aircraft responds usually reveals which setting is wrong.

Why do the brakes apply when I move another control?
FSX has assigned a brake axis or command to the wrong device, often automatically when a new USB controller was connected. A yoke, throttle lever or joystick movement then sends brake input even though the pedals themselves are configured correctly.
Inspect every device in the Controller Type list rather than checking only the pedals. If you use separate control-mapping software, let either that software or FSX own each brake axis, not both. What if the brake pedals never return fully?
A brake axis that jitters or stops short of its released endpoint needs calibration before further FSX adjustments will help. Open Windows Game Controllers by running joy.cpl, select the pedal unit and confirm that both toe-brake axes move smoothly through their range and return to a stable endpoint.
Recalibrate the device if either axis is erratic or cannot reach its endpoint. Back in FSX, begin with high sensitivity and little or no null zone; add only enough null zone to suppress minor input noise. The full process is covered in our Windows brake-pedal calibration checks.
What if only one add-on aircraft has stuck brakes?
If default FSX aircraft roll normally, the global brake assignments are probably sound. Check whether the add-on has wheel chocks, a ground-services panel, a custom parking-brake lever or its own control utility.
Also confirm that the simulator is not paused and that the aircraft has enough power to move. Resetting all FSX controls should be a last resort: it removes useful custom assignments and may automatically place brake axes on the wrong controllers again.
