Which Cessna 172 models use 74 KIAS?

Seventy-four KIAS is the sea-level Vy published for the Cessna 172S, while other models can differ. Representative Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH) figures show why the model suffix matters:

Use the model’s climb-performance table for intermediate pressure altitudes. Earlier 172 manuals may give indicated airspeed in miles per hour rather than knots, so check both the model suffix and units before copying a number.

Published V-speeds are normally based on maximum weight. The aerodynamic optimum shifts lower as weight decreases, but pilots use the published schedule unless approved data supplies a weight correction.

What does Vy mean in a Cessna 172?

Vy is the indicated airspeed that produces the greatest altitude gain per unit of time under the stated conditions. It is not the speed for the steepest climb over the ground; that is Vx, the best angle-of-climb speed.

  • Use Vy when gaining the most altitude per minute is the objective.
  • Use Vx when the approved take-off procedure requires maximum obstacle clearance, then transition as directed once clear.
  • Use the normal climb speed for routine departures when better forward visibility, cooling and passenger comfort are more useful than the absolute maximum climb rate.

How do you establish and hold Vy?

Hold Vy by selecting the correct climb power and configuration, then adjusting pitch until indicated airspeed settles on the target.

  1. Confirm the aircraft variant. Read Vy from the checklist or POH for that exact model and pressure altitude.
  2. Set the approved climb configuration. For a maximum-rate climb this normally means flaps up, allowable climb power applied and mixture set as the POH requires.
  3. Pitch for indicated airspeed. After reaching a safe point in the departure, adjust pitch until the airspeed indicator—not GPS groundspeed or true airspeed—shows Vy.
  4. Trim and cross-check. Trim only after the speed stabilises, make small pitch corrections and monitor engine indications. The vertical-speed indicator confirms the result but should not be chased because it lags.

Why might a Cessna 172 climb slowly at Vy?

A Cessna 172 can hold Vy and still climb slowly because Vy identifies the best available rate, not a guaranteed feet-per-minute figure. Pressure altitude, temperature, aircraft weight and engine output all affect the rate achieved.

  • Wrong speed or units: A value taken from another 172 variant, or an MPH figure mistaken for knots, produces an incorrect target.
  • Wrong indication: GPS groundspeed and true airspeed cannot replace KIAS when flying Vy.
  • Configuration or power: Extended flaps, unsuitable mixture, carburettor heat left on where fitted, or incomplete throttle travel reduces performance.
  • High density altitude: Hot, high conditions can cut climb performance sharply even when the indicated speed is correct.
  • Chasing vertical speed: Repeated pitch changes destabilise airspeed. In a simulator, an autopilot’s vertical-speed mode can also command more climb than the aircraft can sustain, causing speed decay.
