How do I change points in Train Simulator Classic?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn to change points and switches in Train Simulator Classic using G, Shift+G and the 2D map, and fix junctions that remain locked.

In Train Simulator Classic, use the default G key to change the next manual points ahead of your train, or Shift+G for points behind. For precise routing, open the 2D map with 9 and select the available junction marker. Dispatcher-controlled or scenario-locked points cannot be changed manually.

Which point-changing method should you use?

Use the keyboard for a nearby junction and the 2D map when you need to identify an exact switch in a yard, siding or crossover.

MethodBest used forMain limitation
GChanging the next manual points aheadMay target an unexpected junction in complicated trackwork
Shift+GChanging manual points behind the trainWait until the whole consist is clear of the junction
9 and 2D mapSelecting an exact junction or planning a yard routeOnly unlocked, manually controlled junctions respond

These are the default bindings. If they do not work, check the simulator has keyboard focus and that the controls have not been reassigned. Our reference for default keyboard commands and control problems covers the related bindings.

How do you change points using the 2D map?

The 2D map is the safest way to set a precise route because it shows which junction you are operating.

  1. Stop before the junction. Leave enough room that no locomotive or wagon is standing over the pointwork.
  2. Open the map. Press the default 9 key.
  3. Trace the intended route. Follow the track from your train through every junction needed to reach the siding, platform or main line.
  4. Select the junction control. Click the active marker for the manual points and confirm that the indicated branch changes.
  5. Check the complete path. Crossovers and complex yard entrances can involve more than one set of points, so setting the first junction may not complete the route.
  6. Verify the signal. Close the map with 9 and do not move until the route is correctly set and any protecting signal permits movement.

We recommend the map instead of repeatedly pressing G in dense yards. The keyboard command acts on the next eligible junction, which may not be the one you had in mind.

Why will the points not change?

Points usually refuse to move because the scenario dispatcher controls them, the junction is occupied, or another train has a conflicting route.

  • Dispatcher-controlled points: Standard, Career and other scripted scenarios often set the route automatically from the scenario instructions. The player cannot override locked junctions during normal driving.
  • Stock over the junction: A locomotive or wagon may be occupying the pointwork. Move fully clear before trying again.
  • Reserved or conflicting route: The dispatcher may have reserved the section for another service, preventing manual movement.
  • Wrong junction selected: G may operate a nearer junction that is difficult to spot. Use the 2D map to identify the exact control.
  • Custom key assignment: A modified binding can replace the defaults. Check the control settings rather than assuming the route is locked.

Can automatic points be changed manually?

Automatic or dispatcher-locked points generally cannot be changed from the driving controls. In a Free Roam scenario, more junctions are normally available for manual routing; in a scripted service, follow the assigned path instead.

Changing an automatic route usually requires editing the scenario itself, which can invalidate instructions, timings or scoring. A locked point is therefore not necessarily a fault.

Will changing the points clear a red signal?

No—setting the points correctly does not by itself clear a red signal.

The signal may remain at danger because the block is occupied, another service has priority, the dispatcher has not granted the route, or the scenario requires you to wait. Do not pass it merely because the switch blades appear correctly aligned. For the wider procedure, see our practical explanation of signals, routes and normal train driving.
