Train Simulator Classic keyboard controls for driving, brakes, signals, cameras and HUD, with practical fixes when a key does nothing.
Train Simulator Classic’s default Expert controls use W/S for the reverser, A/D for power, ;/' for the train brake, [/] for the locomotive brake and ,/. for dynamic braking. Space sounds the horn, Q acknowledges AWS, T handles station loading, number keys change camera, and F4 toggles the HUD.
Which keys drive and stop the train?
The standard Expert control scheme separates the reverser, power and three types of brake.

Backspace applies the emergency brake. Do not use it as a normal full-service brake: the reset procedure depends on the locomotive and may require the controls to be returned to neutral.
On steam locomotives, A/D operate the regulator and W/S adjust the reverser or cut-off. A locomotive with a combined power-and-brake controller may instead use A/D across the controller’s full range. Dynamic braking normally requires the power controller to be at idle and may be ineffective at very low speed.
What are the default horn, safety and junction keys?
The common system commands cover audible warnings, safety equipment, traction setup, station stops and manual points.

Tab only sends a request; it does not guarantee authority to pass the signal. Likewise, G cannot change points locked by the scenario or dispatcher.
Which camera and HUD keys are used?
The top-row number keys select camera families, while the function keys expose scenario and driving information.

Use the arrow keys or mouse to pan and move compatible cameras; + and - control zoom in many views. Complex scripted scenarios do not always restore perfectly from an F2 save, so saving immediately before a scripted event can be unreliable.

What changes in Simple mode or advanced locomotives?
The controls above assume Expert mode and a locomotive using the standard Train Simulator Classic input system.
Simple mode combines or removes some controls, so the separate brake keys may appear inactive. Choose Expert mode when a scenario or manual refers to train, locomotive and dynamic brakes individually; use Simple mode for introductory driving or stock designed to support it. Advanced DLC can add a master key, cab activation, circuit breaker, brake selector, dual-tone horn or custom start-up sequence. Its supplied manual takes precedence over the base-game chart. Train Sim World also uses a different control implementation, so use our separate Train Sim World key reference rather than assuming every shortcut transfers.
Why does a keyboard control do nothing?
A non-responsive key usually indicates the wrong control mode, an active interlock, a keyboard-layout mismatch or a locomotive-specific script.
- Confirm Expert mode. Separate train, locomotive and dynamic brake commands may not respond in Simple mode.
- Check the cab setup. Power can be blocked by a neutral reverser, applied brakes, an unstarted engine, a lowered pantograph or a locomotive-specific master-key sequence.
- Use the correct brake. The train brake, locomotive brake and dynamic brake are independent; applying one does not prove the others are working.
- Check keyboard focus and layout. Click the simulator window once. On non-QWERTY layouts, test the physical punctuation keys beside
L,PandM. Laptop function keys may also requireFnor Function Lock. - Allow the brake system to charge. Releasing the handle does not release the train instantly if brake-pipe pressure is still recovering.
- Read the locomotive manual. Scripted stock can replace standard shortcuts or require mouse-operated cab controls before keyboard commands become active.
Can Train Simulator Classic controls be remapped?
The base game has limited remapping rather than a comprehensive, universal binding editor, and custom locomotive scripts may not follow global assignments.
Keeping the driving keys at their defaults makes manuals and scenario prompts easier to follow. External keyboard or controller remapping can help with accessibility, but avoid assigning one physical control to several Train Simulator commands: duplicate inputs commonly produce jumping or apparently stuck handles.
