How do I change and save camera views in X-Plane 12?

In X-Plane 12, choose a view from the View menu, position the camera with the mouse or assigned view controls, then press Ctrl plus a numeric-keypad digit (0–9) to save a Quick Look. Press that keypad digit alone to recall the view at any time.

How to save a Quick Look in X-Plane 12

A Quick Look is one of ten built-in camera bookmarks, numbered 0 through 9.

1. Select the base camera mode. Open the View menu and choose the 3-D cockpit, chase, circle, tower or another suitable view. If your keyboard profile still uses the stock assignments, our guide to the default view-selection and Quick Look bindings identifies the relevant commands.
2. Frame the view. Right-drag to look around and use the mouse wheel to change zoom where the selected mode supports them. Use X-Plane's view-translation commands when you need to move the camera forwards, backwards, sideways, up or down; zooming changes image scale rather than the camera's physical position.
3. Save a slot. Hold Ctrl and press a digit on the numeric keypad, such as Numpad 1. The top-row number keys are different inputs and normally will not trigger the default Quick Look shortcuts.
4. Test the bookmark. Move to another angle, release Ctrl, then press the same numeric-keypad digit by itself. X-Plane should return immediately to the saved framing.
5. Replace a saved view. Reposition the camera and press Ctrl plus the same keypad digit again. This overwrites that slot without a separate confirmation or save dialogue.

A practical arrangement is to reserve adjacent slots for the normal pilot's seat, overhead panel, centre pedestal, navigation display and a wing or passenger-window angle.

Which X-Plane camera option should I use?

Use Quick Looks for repeatable framing, the View menu for changing camera type, and free camera when you need to move independently around the aircraft or airport.

How do I save camera views without a numeric keypad?

You can assign both the save and recall commands to ordinary keyboard keys or controller buttons.

1. Open Settings, select Keyboard, and search for quick look, memorize or the numbered saved-view commands.
2. Assign one command that memorises the chosen slot and another that recalls that same slot.
3. Use a modifier for the save command so it cannot be activated accidentally. For example, keep an unmodified button for recall and a modified keyboard combination for saving.
4. Confirm that the intended control profile is active before testing the new assignments.

This is more reliable than an operating system's laptop keypad emulation, which may send navigation keys instead of true numeric-keypad inputs. The same remapping method is useful for putting frequently used cockpit views on a yoke, throttle or joystick.

Are X-Plane 12 Quick Looks saved per aircraft?

Yes. Quick Looks are normally stored with the preferences for the aircraft being flown, rather than as one global set shared by every aircraft.

Separate aircraft variants using different .acf files can therefore have independent camera slots. Liveries based on the same aircraft definition generally share them. The associated aircraft preference file commonly ends in _prefs.txt, so replacing or reinstalling an aircraft may remove its saved views.

A Quick Look is a camera bookmark, not a complete simulator-state preset. It does not preserve panel switches, weather, head-tracker orientation or monitor layout. Changing the field of view or display configuration can also make an existing bookmark appear differently framed.

Why are my saved camera views not working?

When a Quick Look fails, the usual cause is the wrong number key, a changed binding, a different aircraft variant, unwritable aircraft preferences or another camera system overriding the recalled view.

• Nothing happens immediately: use the numeric keypad rather than the top number row, check Num Lock, and inspect the active keyboard profile for altered assignments.
• The view disappears after restarting: save and recall it once before quitting normally, then reopen the exact same aircraft variant. Check that its folder and preference files are not read-only.
• The view works in only one aircraft: this is expected because Quick Looks are aircraft-specific.
• The camera recalls and then moves: pause or centre head tracking and test again. In VR, physical headset movement remains layered over the recalled base position.
• A custom aircraft behaves differently: an aircraft plugin or camera add-on may intercept the standard view commands. Test the same shortcut in a default aircraft to separate an input problem from an aircraft-specific conflict.
• The framing changed after an aircraft update: cockpit geometry or the model's camera origin may have moved. Reposition the camera and overwrite the affected Quick Look.

A useful isolation test is to save an obviously different angle in a default aircraft and recall it before closing X-Plane. If that works, the keyboard binding is sound and the fault is likely confined to the custom aircraft, its preferences or a camera plugin.
