Why are cockpit click spots offset in MSFS 2020?

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, cockpit click spots are usually offset because Windows and the simulator are using different display coordinates. Mixed monitor scaling, a non-native full-screen resolution or moving the sim between monitors are the usual causes. Match the Windows and MSFS resolution and scaling, then restart the simulator.

What causes offset cockpit click spots in MSFS 2020?

A display-coordinate mismatch is the most likely cause when every knob and switch responds a consistent distance away from the mouse pointer. MSFS renders the cockpit in one coordinate space while Windows, a graphics driver or a second monitor reports the pointer in another.

A tooltip appearing beside a knob is not necessarily a fault: tooltips are deliberately placed away from the pointer. The active point is also at the tip of the mouse arrow rather than its centre, so a difference of a few pixels is normal. A large, repeatable offset is not.

How do I realign the mouse with cockpit controls?

Reset the complete display path rather than changing mouse sensitivity, which does not affect click-spot coordinates.

  1. Close MSFS completely. Display scaling changes made while the simulator is running may not be applied correctly until the next launch.
  2. Check Windows display settings. Select the monitor used for MSFS and choose its recommended native resolution. Temporarily set Scale to 100% as a diagnostic. With several monitors, test with the same scale on each display involved.
  3. Match the simulator resolution. In MSFS General Options, select the intended display mode and an output resolution matching that monitor. Temporarily return Render Scaling to 100 if the problem began after graphics changes.   4. Rebuild the game window. Switch between Windowed and Full Screen, apply the change, return to the mode you want and restart MSFS. This refreshes stale window dimensions left after changing resolution or moving the simulator.
  5. Remove manual DPI overrides. If you previously enabled a Windows compatibility option such as Override high DPI scaling behaviour, undo it. Also disable custom desktop resolutions or driver-level scaling temporarily.
  6. Keep MSFS on one monitor while testing. Mixed-DPI displays are a common trigger. If you use detached avionics, close them first; our guidance on running pop-out instruments across multiple monitors covers the focus and display complications.
  7. Reset the cockpit view. Release freelook and return to a normal cockpit camera before testing. If the view moves when you try to select a switch, inspect the cockpit camera and freelook bindings rather than adjusting display scaling again.

If 100% Windows scaling fixes the offset on a high-resolution screen, close MSFS before trying your preferred scale again. The permanent solution may simply be launching the simulator after the display is already configured, rather than moving its window between monitors with different scaling values.

How can I tell whether the aircraft is faulty?

An aircraft fault is likely when the mouse aligns correctly everywhere except one aeroplane, panel or individual control. Load a stock aircraft with no cockpit modification and test several switches across the panel.

  • If the stock aircraft works, disable the affected add-on and any package that changes its cockpit, panel or model.
  • If only one switch is wrong, its invisible interaction area may have been positioned incorrectly by the aircraft developer.
  • If every aircraft has an identical horizontal or vertical offset, return to the Windows resolution, DPI and monitor checks.

Changing joystick calibration, rebuilding a throttle profile or increasing mouse sensitivity will not repair a geometric offset. Those settings alter control input, not where MSFS thinks the pointer is located.

Does Legacy or Lock interaction mode fix misaligned controls?

Legacy and Lock modes change how cockpit controls highlight and respond, but they should not move the clickable area away from the mouse pointer. Switching modes can help only when the pointer is correctly positioned and the control still refuses to turn, drag or toggle.

If the expected knob highlights under the cursor but does nothing, treat it as an interaction or binding problem instead. Follow our checks for cockpit controls that highlight but will not move.
