Fix the DCS World communications menu by checking bindings, radio PTT, aircraft power, tuning, conflicts and off-screen display issues.
The DCS World communications menu usually fails because the wrong command is bound, realistic radio mode requires an aircraft-specific push-to-talk switch, or the selected radio is unpowered or untuned. Check the correct aircraft control profile first, then test the generic communications key on the ground before diagnosing radio settings.
How do I fix the DCS communications menu?
Work through the controls before changing radio frequencies or repairing DCS World.
- Select the correct aircraft and seat. Open DCS Controls and choose the module you are actually flying, including the correct pilot, copilot or crew position where applicable. Bindings are aircraft- and seat-specific; changing a command in the general profile may not affect the cockpit in use. - Find and rebind the communications commands. Search the controls for
communication,radio,micandPTT. The generic menu is commonly assigned to the backslash key on a US keyboard, but keyboard layouts and module defaults differ, so trust the displayed assignment rather than the symbol printed on the key. - Test both the generic menu and the radio PTT. Use a hot-start aircraft on a parking stand, then try the generic Communications Menu command and each radio-specific push-to-talk or microphone-switch position. If the generic key works on the ground but not in flight, the menu itself is functioning; DCS expects the appropriate cockpit radio PTT.
- Check Easy Communication. With
Easy Communicationenabled, DCS can select and tune a suitable radio automatically. With it disabled, full-fidelity aircraft normally require the correct radio, frequency, selector and PTT direction. A mission or multiplayer server may also constrain assistance settings. - Prepare the cockpit radio. Supply electrical power, turn the radio on, choose the required preset or frequency, select the correct transmit radio and use the expected modulation where the aircraft provides that choice. In multicrew aircraft, confirm that the active crew position controls the intended radio or intercom circuit.
- Clear duplicate inputs and macros. Remove the menu command from unused controllers and check HOTAS software for double pulses, repeated keystrokes or press-and-release macros. If a menu appears and immediately vanishes, the command is often being sent twice. F-14 users can also apply our Jester menu conflict and button-bounce checks.
- Test the function keys. DCS menu choices use the function-key row. On laptops and compact keyboards, disable media-key mode or hold the required Fn modifier if pressing an entry changes volume or brightness instead of selecting the radio option.
What does each communications-menu symptom mean?
The exact symptom usually identifies whether the fault is a control, radio or interface problem.

Why does the communications key work on the ground but not in flight?
The generic communications command is not a universal airborne transmit key when realistic communications are in use. On the ground it may provide access to ground crew or interphone functions, while airborne calls require the PTT associated with the radio carrying the selected frequency.
The precise command depends on the module. It may be labelled as a radio PTT, microphone switch direction, transmit switch or a named VHF/UHF radio. Binding one generic menu key to every aircraft is therefore unreliable.
Why does the menu open but ATC, tanker or JTAC not answer?
An open menu confirms that the interface works, but it does not prove that the transmission is going through the correct radio.
- Match the frequency and call sign shown in the mission briefing or kneeboard.
- Use the PTT for the radio containing that frequency, not simply the last radio adjusted.
- Confirm that the recipient exists, is active and belongs to an appropriate coalition in that mission.
- For ground crew, use the required intercom setting or open the canopy where the aircraft models direct voice communication.
- Allow for mission logic: a tanker, JTAC or controller may be unavailable, destroyed, out of range or waiting for its task to activate.

Can DCS-SRS stop the communications menu working?
DCS-SRS and the built-in DCS communications menu use separate commands, so an SRS transmission does not necessarily open or operate the DCS menu.
Test the systems independently: bind one keyboard key to the DCS menu or aircraft PTT, then configure SRS using its own controls. If both functions share a physical switch through controller software, make sure the macro is not sending the DCS command twice. When should I reset the DCS control profile?
Reset the affected aircraft profile only after a clean keyboard binding also fails or the command behaves incorrectly without controller software running.
Back up your controls, close DCS and rename the affected module's folder beneath Saved Games\DCS\Config\Input; installations using a different Saved Games branch name will have the same relative Config\Input structure. DCS will create fresh defaults when it starts again. Do not delete the entire Saved Games folder merely to repair one radio command.
A programme-file repair normally does not reset user bindings because they are stored under Saved Games. If the menu is visible on a monitor that is no longer connected, temporarily select a standard single-screen configuration and restore the main GUI viewport before resetting controls.
