What happened to Air France Concorde Flight 4590?

Air France Flight 4590 crashed shortly after taking off from Paris Charles de Gaulle on 25 July 2000. Concorde F-BTSC struck metal debris on the runway, bursting a tyre; the resulting wing-tank damage caused a major fuel leak and fire. All 109 aboard and four people on the ground died.

What caused the Concorde Flight 4590 crash?

The official French BEA investigation identified a strip of metal left on the runway by another aircraft as the event that initiated the accident.

  1. Debris fell onto the runway: A Continental Airlines DC-10 that departed several minutes earlier shed a non-standard titanium wear strip from a thrust-reverser assembly.
  2. A Concorde tyre struck the strip: During Flight 4590's take-off roll on runway 26R, a tyre on the left main landing gear ran over the strip at high speed and broke apart.
  3. A tyre fragment damaged a fuel tank: A large piece of rubber hit the underside of the left wing near fuel tank No. 5. The impact transmitted a pressure wave through the fuel and ruptured the tank.
  4. Escaping fuel ignited: Fuel poured from the rupture and caught fire. The precise ignition source was not proved conclusively; the investigation considered an electrical arc in the landing-gear area or contact with hot engine components.
  5. Left-side thrust deteriorated: Engines 1 and 2 suffered serious thrust problems while the landing gear remained extended. The aircraft could neither accelerate nor climb normally.

A shorthand explanation we often see is that the titanium strip punctured the tank directly. It did not: the strip destroyed the tyre, and the tyre fragment's impact caused the tank rupture. Why did the pilots continue the take-off?

The tyre encountered the debris after Concorde had passed V1, the calculated decision speed beyond which continuing the take-off is normally safer than attempting to stop.

By then the aircraft was travelling at very high speed with little usable runway remaining. The crew also had no cockpit indication saying that a tyre fragment had ruptured a fuel tank. The visible fire and severe propulsion problems developed as the aircraft reached rotation and became airborne, leaving no practical opportunity for a normal rejected take-off.

Was pilot error the main cause?

No. The official investigation did not identify pilot error as the initiating cause of Flight 4590's crash. It examined secondary concerns, including the aircraft being slightly above its permitted take-off weight and a missing spacer in the left main landing gear, but neither created the tyre-impact and fuel-leak sequence.

Those issues may have reduced an already narrow performance margin. They do not support the common claim that the crew could simply have braked to a safe stop after the fire began.

Why could Flight 4590 not reach Le Bourget?

Flight 4590 lacked the height, airspeed and usable thrust needed to reach nearby Le Bourget Airport after the crew indicated that they would try to land there.

The Concorde remained only a few hundred feet above the ground. Its extended landing gear added drag, while the large fire and uneven thrust from the left-side engines made maintaining speed and directional control increasingly difficult. As thrust deteriorated, the aircraft rolled left, lost control and struck a hotel in Gonesse.

The crash occurred about two minutes after the take-off roll began and little more than a minute after the aircraft became airborne. All 100 passengers and nine crew members died, along with four people on the ground. It remains Concorde's only fatal accident.

What changed after the Flight 4590 crash?

Concorde was grounded until investigators and regulators were satisfied that the tyre-and-fuel-tank vulnerability had been addressed.

  • Impact-resistant liners were installed in vulnerable fuel tanks to limit fuel loss after damage.
  • New high-strength tyres were introduced to reduce the risk of dangerous tyre fragments.
  • Electrical wiring around the landing gear was given additional protection.
  • Maintenance, inspection and operating procedures were revised.

Commercial Concorde services resumed in November 2001 after the modifications were approved. The crash badly damaged confidence in the aircraft, but it was not the sole reason Concorde retired in 2003; falling premium demand, rising maintenance costs and the post-September 2001 aviation downturn also mattered.
