What platforms can you play DCS World on?

Ian Stephens
In short

See which DCS World platforms are supported, including Windows, Steam, VR and cloud, and why Mac, Linux, consoles and mobile are limited.

DCS World is officially playable only on 64-bit Windows PCs. You can install the standalone edition or the Steam edition, and both support monitor and compatible PC VR play. There is no native PlayStation, Xbox, macOS, Linux, iOS or Android version, although cloud streaming provides a limited alternative.

Which DCS World platforms are supported?

Windows PC is the only native, officially supported operating-system platform for DCS World. Steam and standalone are distribution options, while VR is a display mode that still requires the Windows version.

Platform or serviceAvailabilityWhat that means
64-bit Windows PCOfficially supportedRuns the complete simulator through Steam or the standalone installer.
PC VRSupportedRuns through the Windows version; it is not a separate release.
GeForce NOWCloud optionStreams the Steam edition, subject to service availability and peripheral limitations.
LinuxNo native versionCompatibility-layer installations are unofficial and can break after updates.
macOSNot supportedThere is no native Mac build.
PlayStation or XboxNot availableDCS World has no console edition.
iOS or AndroidNot availableThere is no mobile version of the full simulator.

Are Steam and standalone different platforms?

No. Steam and standalone are two ways to install DCS World on Windows, not separate simulator platforms. They use the same core simulation and can ordinarily share multiplayer servers when their versions match.

Choose before buying aircraft, maps or campaigns because licence portability is not symmetrical in every direction. Our comparison of Steam and standalone installations, purchases and updates explains the practical differences. A common mistake is assuming every module purchase can be moved freely between both editions.

Can DCS World run on Linux or macOS?

DCS World has no officially supported Linux or macOS release. Some Linux installations run through Windows compatibility tools, but the launcher, copy protection, multiplayer checks, VR or individual modules may fail following an update.

Running it through virtualisation or translation on a Mac is also unsupported and does not turn it into a native Mac application. Read our breakdown of the practical Linux and macOS limitations before buying hardware or paid modules for either system.

Is DCS World on PlayStation, Xbox or mobile?

No DCS World edition exists for PlayStation, Xbox, iPhone, iPad or Android devices. Its support for gamepads does not indicate console compatibility; the complete simulator still requires Windows or a streamed Windows session.

Remote-display and cockpit-control apps may accompany a PC installation, but they do not run the full simulator. We cover the specific console situation in our guide to DCS World availability on PlayStation and Xbox.

Can you play DCS World without a gaming PC?

Cloud streaming is the main alternative to running DCS World locally. The Steam edition can be streamed through GeForce NOW where the title and service are available, but this is still the Windows game running on a remote computer.

Latency, connection quality and controller pass-through matter more here than they do for many games. A mouse, keyboard or standard controller is easier to accommodate than a full HOTAS, rudder-pedal and head-tracking setup, while local PC VR is not replaced by an ordinary cloud session. Check how DCS World works through GeForce NOW before treating cloud play as a substitute for a local installation.
