Learn what X-Plane 11 mesh scenery changes, where to install it, how to order scenery_packs.ini, and why mesh and orthophoto tiles conflict.
Mesh scenery in X-Plane 11 is the base terrain for a geographic tile: its elevation, coastlines, water and land-class geometry. Install it by extracting the complete package into Custom Scenery, starting X-Plane once, then placing its SCENERY_PACK entry below airports and overlays in scenery_packs.ini. Only the highest-priority base mesh loads per tile.
What mesh scenery changes in X-Plane 11
Mesh scenery changes the shape and classification of the ground beneath airports, roads, buildings and other scenery. A base mesh divides each one-degree DSF tile into terrain triangles whose elevation data create mountains, valleys, cliffs and slopes. It also defines features such as coastlines, water boundaries and the terrain types used for ground textures.
A denser or better-sourced mesh can produce more convincing terrain, but it does not automatically provide sharper textures, detailed airports or extra buildings. Those may come from orthophoto, airport or overlay packages.

How do I install mesh scenery in X-Plane 11?
Install mesh as a separate package under X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery; never overwrite the simulator's default Global Scenery files.
- Download every required archive part. Large regional packages may be split into several files. Follow the package instructions and make sure every part has finished downloading before extraction.
- Extract the archive completely. Extract it to a temporary location first. Do not put the compressed ZIP, 7z or RAR archive directly into
Custom Scenery. - Find the actual scenery package folder. Its internal structure should normally resemble
Package Name/Earth nav data/.... Documentation may sit beside that folder rather than inside it. - Move the package into Custom Scenery. The resulting path should resemble
X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery/Package Name/Earth nav data. A duplicated level such asPackage Name/Package Name/Earth nav dataprevents X-Plane from finding the scenery. - Start X-Plane and then close it. X-Plane scans the folder and adds a corresponding entry to
Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini. - Correct the load order. Open
scenery_packs.iniin a plain-text editor and move the mesh entry below airports and overlays. Save it without changing the filename or file type. - Test inside a covered tile. Load a location where the replacement terrain should be obvious, then inspect
Log.txtin the X-Plane 11 root folder if the package does not appear.
Removing mesh scenery is equally safe: delete its package folder and remove the matching line from scenery_packs.ini. X-Plane will fall back to another installed mesh or its default global terrain.
Where should mesh go in scenery_packs.ini?
Mesh entries belong near the bottom of scenery_packs.ini because X-Plane gives entries nearer the top higher priority.
- Top: custom airport packages.
- Below custom airports: the X-Plane 11 Global Airports package.
- Middle: regional overlays containing roads, forests and buildings.
- Bottom: orthophoto and other base-mesh packages, ordered according to which terrain should win in overlapping tiles.
A normal active entry resembles SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Package Name/. An entry beginning with SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED will not load.
X-Plane searches down the list for each tile and stops when it reaches a base mesh. Any competing mesh below that point is ignored for the tile, and overlays placed below the winning mesh may disappear as well. This is why putting mesh above airports or overlays can remove roads, buildings and other expected detail.
Folder prefixes such as zzz_ are not a substitute for editing an existing scenery_packs.ini. Once the file exists, move the entry itself rather than relying on the package's folder name.
Can mesh and orthophoto scenery work together?
Mesh and orthophoto packages can coexist across different regions, but two base meshes cannot be combined within the same DSF tile simply by stacking their folders.
Most X-Plane orthophoto scenery includes its own terrain mesh, so placing it above a generic mesh makes the photo tile win. Putting the generic mesh above it hides the orthophoto tile in the overlapping area. A large package such as our California photo-scenery download should therefore be treated as competing base terrain wherever its tiles overlap another mesh.
Separate overlay packages are different: they should sit above all base meshes. Choose orthophoto as the higher-priority base when aerial imagery matters most; choose the conventional mesh when its elevation, coastlines or land-class representation is preferable.
Why is my mesh scenery not showing?
Mesh usually fails to appear because X-Plane cannot find the package or a higher-priority base mesh already covers the same tile.
- Wrong folder depth: open the installed package and check that
Earth nav datais not buried inside an extra duplicate folder. - Incorrect coverage: confirm that the downloaded region contains the one-degree tile around your test location, not merely a neighbouring city or airport.
- Priority conflict: search
scenery_packs.inifor orthophoto and other mesh packages covering the same area. The first applicable base mesh wins. - Disabled or missing entry: verify that the package has an active
SCENERY_PACKline and that its folder name matches the installed directory. - Incomplete extraction: extract the archive again if terrain files are absent or
Log.txtreports unreadable or missing DSF data. - Missing overlay assets: pure mesh normally needs no external object libraries. If
Log.txtidentifies a missing library, the package also contains or depends on overlay content; use our scenery-library installation procedure rather than moving the mesh above everything else.
A changed runway slope is not necessarily an installation fault. Mesh elevation can alter airport contours, while X-Plane 11's runway-terrain setting and any flattening defined by the airport package also affect the result.
