What is mesh scenery in X-Plane 11, and how do I install it?

Mesh scenery in X-Plane 11 is the base terrain for a geographic tile: its elevation triangles, coastlines, water and land-class data beneath airports and overlays. Install a compatible package in Custom Scenery, let X-Plane add it to scenery_packs.ini, then place its entry below airports and overlays. Only one base mesh loads per tile.

Mesh 是啥: what does mesh scenery contain?

Mesh is X-Plane 11’s physical and categorical model of the ground—the plain-language answer to “mesh 是啥?” is that it provides the three-dimensional land-and-water foundation, not the airport or building layer.

A base mesh divides each one-degree DSF tile into triangles. The height of their vertices forms mountains, valleys, cliffs and slopes, while terrain definitions control water, coastlines and the generic terrain shown on land. A package is generated from source terrain data such as elevation, shoreline and land-use information.

More triangles can represent finer terrain features, but density alone does not guarantee better results. The quality of the source data, coastline processing and airport constraints matters too. Mesh does not automatically add detailed airports, sharper aerial photography, roads or buildings.

What about the land, water and terrain data?

The base mesh controls the shape and classification of the land, along with water boundaries and coastlines. This is why replacing it can change a mountain profile, move a shoreline or make an island look more accurate even though the airport objects remain unchanged.

How do I install mesh scenery in X-Plane 11?

Install mesh as a self-contained package beneath X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery; do not overwrite files inside the simulator’s default Global Scenery folder.

  1. Confirm compatibility and coverage. The package must support X-Plane 11 and contain the geographic tiles you need. Do not assume a mesh made for another X-Plane generation is interchangeable.   2. Download every archive part. Regional mesh downloads are often divided into several files. Follow the package-specific extraction instructions and wait until all required parts are complete.
  3. Extract to a temporary location. Do not leave a ZIP, 7z or RAR archive in Custom Scenery. Check that extraction produced the expected terrain files without reporting errors.
  4. Locate the actual package root. A normal structure resembles Package Name/Earth nav data/.... Some downloads have an outer documentation folder; move the inner scenery package rather than the wrapper.
  5. Preserve all package components. Texture and terrain-definition folders may sit beside Earth nav data. Do not move only the DSF files or rearrange the internal directories.
  6. Move the package into Custom Scenery. The resulting path should resemble X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery/Package Name/Earth nav data. A duplicated path such as Package Name/Package Name/Earth nav data is a common reason X-Plane cannot detect it.
  7. Let X-Plane register the package. Start X-Plane 11, allow it to reach the main screen, then close it. The simulator scans Custom Scenery and updates scenery_packs.ini.
  8. Correct the load order. Open Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini in a plain-text editor and move the mesh entry below airports and overlays. Save it with the same filename and without adding a word-processor format.
  9. Test a covered tile. Load a location where the terrain or coastline difference should be recognisable. If nothing changes, inspect Log.txt in the X-Plane 11 root folder and check for the package name or DSF tile coordinate.

To uninstall the mesh, remove its package folder and delete the matching line from scenery_packs.ini. X-Plane will then use another installed base mesh for that tile or fall back to its default terrain.

Where should mesh go in scenery_packs.ini?

Mesh entries belong near the bottom of scenery_packs.ini because entries nearer the top have higher priority.

  1. Top: custom airport packages.
  2. Below custom airports: the X-Plane 11 Global Airports package.
  3. Middle: regional overlays containing roads, forests, buildings and objects.
  4. Lower section: orthophoto and other base-mesh packages, with the preferred terrain above competing meshes.
  5. Bottom: lower-priority fallback mesh packages.

An active entry normally resembles SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Package Name/. A line beginning with SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED is disabled and will not load.

For each tile, X-Plane searches from the top of the list and uses the first applicable base mesh. Competing meshes below it cannot contribute their elevations or textures. Overlays should remain above the winning mesh; an overlay placed below it may not appear.

A folder prefix such as zzz_ does not override an existing scenery_packs.ini entry. A mistake we see constantly is renaming the folder but leaving its old line in the file. Move or correct the entry itself, and ensure its path matches the folder’s new name.

Can OverlayEditor edit mesh in X-Plane 11?

No. OverlayEditor is intended for overlay and object placement; it is not a base-mesh editor and cannot merge or reshape X-Plane 11 terrain triangles.

A mesh overlay and a base mesh are different things. The base mesh supplies the land itself, while an overlay adds scenery on top of it. An overlay package edited with a compatible scenery tool should remain above the base mesh in scenery_packs.ini.

Changing terrain elevation requires rebuilding or patching the base mesh with a workflow designed for that purpose. Moving an overlay higher in the list cannot alter mountains, coastlines or runway slopes, and stacking two meshes cannot combine the best features of each.

Can Ortho4XP and X-Plane 11 mesh work together?

Ortho4XP scenery can coexist with conventional mesh packages, but its generated orthophoto tile normally contains its own base mesh and therefore replaces other meshes in the same tile.

  • Put the Ortho4XP tile higher when you want its aerial imagery and generated terrain. A generic mesh below it becomes the fallback outside the orthophoto coverage.
  • Put the conventional mesh higher when its terrain and generic textures are preferred. The overlapping orthophoto tile will then be hidden.
  • Keep extracted overlays above both. Roads, forests and buildings from a separate overlay package can appear over either winning base mesh.
  • Rebuild rather than stack if you need orthophoto imagery generated with different elevation data. X-Plane cannot take imagery from one installed base mesh and terrain geometry from another at load time.

Which mesh coverage do I need for Greece?

For Greece, choose an X-Plane 11-compatible package that includes every one-degree tile crossed by your route, not merely a download labelled for a nearby airport or broad region.

This matters around Greece because the mainland, island groups and surrounding coastlines span many tiles. Check the package’s coverage information and archive contents for both departure and destination areas. A missing island tile will fall back to another installed mesh even when the neighbouring mainland tile works correctly.

Coastline and water data are especially visible around Greek islands, so source quality may matter as much as raw mesh density. At airports, flattening defined by the airport package or X-Plane 11’s runway-terrain setting can mask some elevation differences.

How do X-Plane terrain tile names work?

A DSF filename identifies the latitude and longitude of the tile’s south-west corner. For example, +37+023.dsf covers 37° to 38° north and 23° to 24° east. This lets you verify coverage without relying only on a country or regional label.

Does -4 + x = -11 identify a terrain tile?

No. -4 + x = -11 is an algebra equation, whose solution is x = -7; it is not X-Plane tile notation.

A similarly written file such as -04-011.dsf is a coordinate label rather than an equation. It identifies the tile whose south-west corner is 4° south and 11° west.

Why is my X-Plane 11 mesh scenery not showing?

Mesh usually fails to appear because X-Plane cannot find the package, the test location lies outside its coverage, or a higher-priority base mesh already occupies the same tile.

  • Wrong folder depth: open the direct child folder under Custom Scenery and check that Earth nav data is not buried inside another duplicate package folder.
  • Incomplete extraction: download or extract the package again if DSF, terrain or texture files are absent. Multi-part archives require every applicable part.
  • Wrong geographic tile: compare the aircraft location with the DSF filenames supplied by the package. Coverage of a nearby city does not guarantee coverage of your airport.
  • Competing mesh: inspect higher entries in scenery_packs.ini for orthophoto or another base mesh containing the same tile. The first applicable one wins.
  • Disabled or stale entry: replace SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED with an active entry if appropriate, and update the path if the package folder was renamed.
  • Unsupported package: verify that the mesh was built for X-Plane 11 and that any package-specific requirements have been met.
  • No obvious visual difference: compare a distinctive mountain, valley or coastline rather than airport buildings. Airport flattening can also conceal local terrain changes.
  • Missing overlay resources: a pure base mesh rarely needs third-party object libraries. Missing-resource messages usually indicate that the download also contains an overlay component, or that part of the package was omitted.

After a failed test, close X-Plane and search Log.txt for the package folder name and relevant DSF coordinate. A package may legitimately omit tiles outside its stated coverage, but unreadable-file and missing-resource messages point to extraction or dependency problems.

X-Plane 11’s default Global Scenery is the final fallback and is stored separately from add-ons in Custom Scenery. If whole regions appear as water or the simulator reports missing default terrain after custom mesh is removed, follow our repair procedure for missing or damaged Global Scenery rather than copying add-on files over the default installation.
