Neither download should be mistaken for a collection of handcrafted New Zealand airports. Custom airports and X-Plane's Global Airports can appear over either base scenery when their priority is set correctly.
Does X-Plane 11 New Zealand scenery work in X-Plane 12?
Yes, the linked photoreal package is labelled for X-Plane 11, but its scenery format can be used in X-Plane 12.
It remains legacy scenery rather than a package rebuilt specifically around X-Plane 12. Do not assume that every X-Plane 12-specific effect, particularly seasonal texture treatment and water transitions, will match the default scenery. Image colour and sharpness can also vary between source tiles.
UHD Mesh Scenery v4 is legacy-generation scenery too. It may provide terrain detail you prefer, but it is not automatically better than the X-Plane 12 global scenery in every location or season.
How do you install New Zealand scenery in X-Plane 12?
Install the extracted package folders under X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery/, then place airports and overlays above the photographic or UHD base mesh in scenery_packs.ini.
- Download every required archive. If the listing divides the scenery into several parts, obtain all required parts before extracting anything.
- Extract the files. Do not leave ZIP or other archive files in
Custom Scenery; X-Plane cannot load scenery directly from them. - Check the folder depth. The actual package folder should sit directly inside
Custom Scenery. An accidental structure such asCustom Scenery/Package/Package/Earth nav dataprevents detection. - Start and close X-Plane once. This allows the simulator to register the new folders and update
scenery_packs.ini. - Correct the scenery priority. With X-Plane closed, keep custom airports and Global Airports above overlays, and keep overlays above the photoreal or UHD base mesh near the bottom.
- Test inside the covered area. Load a flight over the North or South Island and compare recognisable coastlines, roads or fields rather than judging the package solely by an airport terminal.

Why does the New Zealand scenery not appear?
The usual causes are an extra nested folder, incomplete extraction or another base mesh taking priority over the New Zealand package.
- Competing base meshes: X-Plane cannot blend two base meshes covering the same one-degree DSF tile. Whichever eligible base-mesh package has higher priority wins; the lower one is ignored for that tile.
- Incorrect order: X-Plane often adds a newly discovered pack near the top of
scenery_packs.ini. Move photographic or UHD mesh scenery below airports and overlays. - Disabled scenery: Check that its entry does not begin with
SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED. - Missing buildings or roads: If the imagery appears but 3D features do not, the required overlay may be absent, disabled or ordered below the base mesh.
- Damaged or partial files: Re-extract the complete download if X-Plane reports unreadable terrain, texture or DSF files.
After closing X-Plane, inspect Log.txt for the package name and the first associated error. That message usually distinguishes a bad folder path from a missing file or scenery-order conflict.
