How do I enter and activate a G1000 flight plan in MSFS?

On the Garmin G1000 in Microsoft Flight Simulator, press FPL on the MFD, use the FMS knobs to enter each waypoint, and confirm each entry with ENT. A plan entered on the Active Flight Plan page is already active; select the correct leg, set CDI to GPS, then use NAV mode to follow it.

This workflow applies to the stock Garmin G1000 implementation in MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024. A third-party aircraft with customised avionics may use different softkeys or restrict flight-plan editing.

How do I manually enter a G1000 flight plan?

Manual entry is performed on the MFD’s Active Flight Plan page using the outer and inner FMS knobs.

  1. Power the avionics. Complete the aircraft’s electrical start-up or begin with the aircraft ready to fly, then use the larger G1000 display on the right.
  2. Open the flight plan. Press FPL. Confirm that the Active Flight Plan page is displayed rather than the flight-plan catalogue or another information page.
  3. Activate the cursor. Push the FMS knob. A highlighted field should appear. The large outer knob normally moves between fields, while the small inner knob changes letters, numbers or menu selections.
  4. Enter the first identifier. Highlight an empty row, turn the small knob and enter the airport or waypoint identifier. Press ENT. If the G1000 finds several matching identifiers, select the correct location and press ENT again.
  5. Add the remaining waypoints. Move to the next blank row and repeat the process in route order. Include the destination airport, but use the procedure system for departures, arrivals and approaches rather than typing every procedure fix manually.
  6. Check the route. Look for incorrect identifiers, duplicate fixes and an unexpected route line. The active leg is shown in magenta; inactive legs are normally white.
  7. Close the cursor. Push the FMS knob again when editing is complete. Set the CDI source to GPS before asking the autopilot to follow the route.

Do I need to activate the whole flight plan?

No separate activation is required when the route already appears on the Active Flight Plan page. What usually needs attention is the active leg—the segment the GPS is commanding the aircraft to fly.

Activate Leg preserves the published course from the preceding fix to the selected waypoint. Direct-to draws a new course from the aircraft’s present position to that waypoint. Choose Activate Leg when intercepting an existing route segment; choose Direct-to when cleared straight to a fix.

How do I add a departure, arrival or approach?

Use the PROC key to select departures, arrivals and approaches from the G1000 database. Select the airport, procedure, transition and runway where those choices are available, then choose Load or Activate.

Loading an approach places it in the flight plan without immediately abandoning the en-route leg. Activating it makes the approach guidance active, so do that only when you are ready or have been cleared to join it. Do not manually enter every fix from a published procedure and then load the same procedure through PROC. That creates duplicate waypoints and is a common cause of loops or unexpected turns.

Why will the G1000 not follow my flight plan?

Most tracking failures come from the wrong CDI source, an inactive leg or NAV mode being armed when the aircraft is poorly positioned to intercept the route.

  • The knobs do nothing: push the FMS knob to activate the cursor and make sure you are manipulating the MFD controls. If fields remain unresponsive, use our G1000 FMS control troubleshooting steps.
  • No leg is magenta: highlight the intended waypoint and use MENU then Activate Leg, or use Direct-to if that is what you intend.
  • The route is magenta but the aircraft stays on heading: press CDI until the navigation source shows GPS, engage or arm NAV, and verify that the autopilot and flight director are on.
  • NAV is armed but not capturing: use heading mode to intercept the magenta course at a sensible angle. NAV mode may remain armed if the aircraft is too far from the leg or flying away from it.
  • Waypoint sequencing has stopped: check for OBS or SUSP. Cancel the hold or suspension only when continuing to the next leg is appropriate.
  • The aircraft makes an unexpected turn: inspect the waypoint order, duplicate procedure fixes and the selected active leg before blaming the autopilot.

A G1000 flight plan supplies lateral navigation. It does not automatically manage altitude, airspeed or throttle merely because GPS and NAV are active; those require the appropriate autopilot modes and pilot inputs.
