The essential train simulator keyboard controls are the reverser, power or throttle, train brake, locomotive brake, emergency brake, horn, safety-system acknowledgement, doors and camera keys. There is no universal layout: Train Simulator Classic and Train Sim World share many PC defaults, but other simulators and individual locomotives can map them differently.
Which train simulator keys matter most?
These common PC defaults cover the controls needed to move, stop and operate most trains in Train Simulator Classic and the traditional Train Sim World keyboard layout.

How do you use the controls to start moving?
A train should be made ready, placed in direction, released from its brakes and powered one notch at a time.
- Prepare the cab: activate the master key or driving desk if the locomotive models one, then confirm that power is off and the brakes are applied.
- Select direction: use
Wto move the reverser from neutral into forward. Some locomotives refuse to change direction while power is applied. - Release every brake: release the train and locomotive brakes, plus any parking or handbrake fitted to the vehicle. Watch the brake-cylinder and brake-pipe indications rather than relying only on the handle position.
- Apply power gently: tap
Ato take the first power notch. Holding the key can run rapidly through several notches and cause wheel slip. - Brake early: return power to zero with
D, allow the train to coast, then use the train brake for a progressive service stop.
The train brake acts through the consist and is the normal choice for stopping. The locomotive or independent brake affects only the powered vehicle, so it is useful for holding a locomotive or making low-speed adjustments but is a poor way to stop a long train. Why does the train not move when you press the power key?
A train that remains stationary usually has an interlock, brake or cab setup preventing traction rather than a faulty keyboard command.
- Reverser still neutral: select forward or reverse after activating the driving desk.
- Brake still applied: check the train brake, independent brake, parking brake and handbrakes.
- Brake pipe charging: an air-braked train may need time to recharge after coupling or an emergency application.
- Doors open: many passenger units use traction interlock and will not take power until every door is closed.
- Safety penalty active: acknowledging with
Qmay not clear an existing penalty immediately. Return power to zero and follow the locomotive's reset procedure. - Cab not enabled: some trains require a master key, direction selector, battery or control switch to be set in the cab.
- No electrical supply: an electric locomotive may need its pantograph, circuit breaker or appropriate power system configured.
What changes between locomotives and simulators?
The core actions remain similar, but the controls behind them depend on the traction type and the realism of the simulation.
A multiple unit may use one combined power-and-brake controller, while a diesel or electric locomotive can have separate power, train-brake, independent-brake and dynamic-brake handles. Steam locomotives add regulator, cut-off, cylinder-cock, injector and blower controls. Safety equipment also varies by route and country, and one acknowledgement key does not replace learning the correct system procedure.
Remap paired controls logically, keep emergency braking away from frequently used keys, and retain an easy-to-reach safety acknowledgement. If a displayed shortcut does nothing, test it in the control-settings screen; non-US keyboard layouts are a common cause of brake keys appearing under different symbols.
