Set up DCS World F-16C IFF, select Mode 4, enter mission codes, interrogate radar contacts and fix missing friendly replies.
To set up IFF in DCS World’s F-16C, set the IFF MASTER knob to NORM, select the mission-assigned Mode 4 key bank—normally A unless the briefing says B—and confirm the required modes and codes on the ICP IFF page. Interrogate FCR contacts with TMS Left; a valid Mode 4 reply identifies a friendly.
A hot-start aircraft is usually configured already. For a cold start, or when a multiplayer mission assigns specific codes, use the following procedure.
F-16C IFF setup from a cold start
- Read the mission briefing. Look for an assigned Mode 4 bank and any Mode 1 or Mode 3/A code. Server instructions override the usual defaults.
- Power the IFF system. On the left console, turn
IFF MASTERtoNORM.STBYpowers the equipment without normal operational replies, whileEMERis reserved for an emergency. - Select the Mode 4 bank. Set
M-4 CODEto A, or B when specifically assigned. Do not selectZERO; that is a zeroise command, not a reset function.HOLDis associated with retaining loaded key data rather than selecting the normal operational bank. - Check the ICP IFF page. Press the dedicated IFF priority button and use the DED prompts to verify the required modes. Enter Mode 1 or Mode 3/A codes only when the mission supplies them. The Mode 4 cryptographic key itself is normally loaded by the mission and is not typed into the ICP.

How do you interrogate a contact with F-16C IFF?
Make the FCR the sensor of interest, place the contact within the radar’s coverage and command an interrogation with TMS Left.
- TMS Left short: use the line-of-sight or cursor interrogation to check the contact of interest.
- TMS Left long: commands a broader scan interrogation across the radar volume in modes that support it.
The broader interrogation still follows the radar’s azimuth and elevation coverage; it does not check every aircraft around you. A successful Mode 4 response produces a friendly IFF cue, commonly a circle around the radar return. The exact presentation can vary with radar and display mode.

Do I need to enter Mode 1 or Mode 3 codes?
Only enter Mode 1 or Mode 3/A codes when the briefing or multiplayer server assigns them; basic combat identification normally relies on Mode 4.

A mistake we see constantly is changing Mode 1 or Mode 3/A and expecting an unknown radar return to become friendly. Those codes may support mission procedures or scripts, but they do not replace a valid Mode 4 response.
Why is F-16C IFF not showing friendlies?
Missing friendly replies usually come from an incorrect panel setting, an interrogation outside the radar volume or a control-binding problem.
- IFF is off or in standby: return
IFF MASTERtoNORM. - The wrong Mode 4 bank is selected: compare A or B with the mission briefing.
ZEROwas selected: the loaded key may no longer be usable; re-slotting or restarting the aircraft may be required by the mission.- The FCR is not SOI: make it the active display before using the TMS command.
- The contact is outside the interrogation volume: adjust radar azimuth, elevation and range so the target lies within coverage.
- TMS Left is double-bound: clear duplicate joystick, throttle or keyboard assignments.
- The other aircraft is not replying: its transponder may be off, damaged, incorrectly configured or beyond effective line of sight.
Is IFF the same as Link 16?
No. IFF is an active challenge-and-reply system, while Link 16 supplies tracks and identification data from your flight or other donors. Datalink symbology can indicate a friendly even when you have not received your own Mode 4 reply, and missing datalink tracks should be troubleshot through MIDS rather than the IFF panel.
Does no IFF reply mean the aircraft is hostile?
No; no reply means unknown, not hostile. Terrain masking, range, antenna geometry, damage, an incorrect key bank or a disabled transponder can all prevent a friendly response.
Before engaging, correlate the radar return with datalink information, AWACS declarations, visual identification and the mission’s rules of engagement.
