Blocky water and low-resolution textures in FSX: Steam Edition usually come from reduced texture settings, overloaded scenery rendering, a damaged texture replacement or a graphics-driver override. Raise the texture-resolution controls and use anisotropic filtering first; if square water tiles remain, reset FSX’s configuration and restore the original water textures through Steam.
What causes blocky water in FSX: Steam Edition?
The appearance and timing of the problem usually reveal whether FSX is displaying low-quality source files or failing to load sharper texture levels quickly enough.

Default FSX water contains visible repetition, especially from altitude, and its terrain cannot match a modern simulator’s detail. Large square transitions, permanently coarse textures and scenery that never resolves are faults or configuration problems rather than normal texture repetition.
How do I fix low-resolution textures in FSX: Steam?
Work through these changes in order so that a damaged add-on does not get mistaken for a performance problem.
- Establish a clean test. Load a default aircraft at a daylight coastal location. Temporarily remove recently installed water, environment and texture replacements. Unticking scenery in the Scenery Library is not enough when an installer has copied files directly into FSX’s main
Texturefolder. - Correct the display settings. Open FSX’s Display settings. On the graphics page, set Global Texture Resolution high and choose Anisotropic filtering. On the scenery page, choose an appropriately high Texture Resolution setting; where FSX expresses this in metres, a smaller value means finer ground detail. Enable Land Detail Textures and begin with Water Effects around the middle of its range. - Restart FSX and repeat the same flight. Rendering-path and texture changes do not always produce a reliable comparison until the simulator has been closed and reopened.
- Leave time for textures to load. Try a fixed target such as 30 FPS instead of Unlimited. If performance is poor, reduce autogen, traffic, cloud coverage and Water Effects before lowering texture resolution.
- Regenerate the configuration. Close FSX and rename its active configuration file rather than deleting it. It is stored beneath
%APPDATA%\Microsoft; the folder and file name can differ when boxed FSX and Steam Edition have both been installed. FSX creates a clean configuration on its next launch, after which you must reapply your display settings. - Restore altered Steam files. Open the game’s properties in Steam and run its file-integrity verification. This repairs missing or modified default textures, but it can also replace intentional modifications, so back those up first.
- Test the rendering path. Disable Preview DirectX 10, restart FSX and compare the same view. If that fixes the water, keep it disabled or identify the incompatible environment add-on. Reset any FSX-specific graphics-driver profile to application-controlled settings while diagnosing the fault.
Anti-aliasing smooths object edges but does not make terrain or water textures sharper. Mesh Resolution changes the shape of the ground, not the resolution of the image drawn across it; raising mesh settings will not repair pixelated water.
Why do FSX textures sharpen only after pausing?
Textures that become sharp after pausing indicate a loading bottleneck rather than damaged texture files.
FSX performs much of its scenery work on a heavily loaded main thread. Running at Unlimited frame rate is a mistake we see constantly: the simulator spends available processing time drawing frames while terrain texture requests fall behind. A sensible frame limit gives the scenery system more opportunity to load the correct mip levels.
Keep the two texture-resolution settings high while reducing Water Effects, autogen density, AI and road or boat traffic, and demanding cloud settings. An SSD can improve file access, but it cannot correct CPU saturation or add detail absent from the source scenery.
What if only the water is still blocky?
Water-only artefacts after a clean stock test usually point to replaced texture files or a rendering compatibility problem, not the terrain-resolution sliders.
First restore the default files through Steam and retest before reinstalling any environment package. If stock water works but its appearance is still unsatisfactory, consider an alternative water-texture package intended to improve FSX oceans while reducing texture memory use. Back up the files it replaces and change only one water package at a time; mixing files from several sets is a common cause of visible tile boundaries.
Do not treat TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD as a universal fix. Raising that configuration value cannot create detail missing from the source texture. It only permits larger textures where an add-on supplies them, and very high-resolution add-ons consume more of FSX’s limited 32-bit memory space.
If square water tiles disappear but one region’s land remains permanently soft, that scenery is probably using low-resolution imagery. No filtering or configuration tweak can manufacture extra ground detail; the remedy is a correctly installed higher-resolution scenery package for that area.
