How do I fix broken or missing water textures in FSX?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix broken or missing water textures in FSX with checks for DX10 Preview, corrupt files, scenery conflicts and replacement texture packs.

To fix broken or missing water textures in FSX, first disable DirectX 10 Preview and restart the simulator. If the fault remains everywhere, restore the original texture files through Steam verification or a boxed-edition repair. If it appears only in one area, disable conflicting scenery rather than replacing global textures.

Is this really a water texture problem?

The location and appearance of the fault usually identify its cause. Water textures used worldwide are stored in FSX's main Texture folder, while an add-on can introduce local coastline, water-polygon or texture problems.

Land appearing where water should be is not normally a water-texture failure. It points to damaged coastline data, exclusions or terrain scenery, so replacing ocean images will not correct it.

How do I restore the default FSX water textures?

Restore the stock files before installing another texture pack, because this establishes whether the simulator or an add-on caused the damage.

  1. Back up modified files. Save copies of any water textures you manually placed in the main FSX Texture folder. Do not merge another package into that folder while troubleshooting.
  2. Turn off DirectX 10 Preview. Clear the DirectX 10 Preview option in FSX's display settings, close the simulator completely and launch it again. If the option is not present in your installation, skip this step.
  3. Restore the simulator files. For FSX: Steam Edition, open the game's properties in Steam and run the installed-file integrity check. This can replace altered stock textures, so expect deliberate modifications inside default FSX folders to be overwritten. For boxed FSX, use the original installer's Repair option if it is offered.
  4. Rebuild the shader cache. Close FSX, open %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX, and rename the Shaders and Shaders10 folders if they exist. FSX recreates them at the next launch; this does not delete aircraft or scenery.
  5. Test a default coastal location. Use default scenery, daylight and ordinary weather. If the water is now normal, re-enable scenery or reinstall texture modifications one at a time until the culprit returns.

If Repair is unavailable for boxed FSX, a clean reinstall is the reliable way to recover unknown stock files. Preserve your add-ons and configuration first; if rebuilding an Acceleration installation, retain the correct base simulator, service-pack and Acceleration installation order rather than mixing stand-alone SP2 with Acceleration.

What if water is missing only around one airport or coastline?

A regional problem is almost always scenery-related rather than a failure of FSX's global water textures. Disable the newest or highest-priority scenery covering that area, restart FSX and test the same coordinates again.

  • If removing one scenery entry restores the water, reinstall that add-on and confirm that both its scenery and texture folders were copied.
  • If two products cover the same region, adjust their Scenery Library priority or use only one set of coastline and terrain-vector files.
  • If water has become land, inspect scenery exclusions and terrain files. A global ocean texture replacement cannot redraw missing water polygons.
  • Do not copy global water files into an add-on's local texture folder unless its installation instructions explicitly require that location.

Should I install replacement water textures?

Use replacement textures only after FSX works correctly with its stock files, or when you have identified damaged water files that cannot be recovered through Repair. Back up every file the package will overwrite and install only one water set at a time.

Do not install both packages together. Combining sets makes rollback difficult and can leave mismatched water colours, wave detail or shoreline transitions.

Why is the water still black or white after restoring the files?

Persistent black or white water after a successful file repair usually indicates rendering trouble rather than missing images. Keep DirectX 10 Preview disabled, lower the Water effects setting by one level and retest after rebuilding the shader cache.

Also reverse the most recent graphics, shader or texture modification. Dark water beneath heavy cloud or at night can be normal in FSX, but a sharply bounded white sheet, solid black tile or repeated blank square is not.
