How do I fix FS2004 add-ons that do not appear?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix FS2004 add-ons that install but do not appear by checking the FS9 path, folder depth, Scenery Library, aircraft files and dependencies.

When an FS2004 add-on installs but does not appear, it is usually in the wrong FS9 folder, buried one directory too deep, not activated in the Scenery Library, or missing a required base package. Identify whether it is aircraft, scenery or a utility, verify its structure, then restart Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.

Where did the FS2004 add-on actually install?

The destination must be the same folder that contains the copy of fs9.exe you launch. This matters after moving or reinstalling FS2004 because an automatic installer may read an obsolete registry path and place its files in an old installation.

Check the target of your FS2004 shortcut, then compare that location with the path shown by the add-on installer. A mistake we see constantly is selecting the Aircraft or Addon Scenery subfolder when an installer actually expects the main FS2004 folder. Our FS2004 folder-by-folder installation guide explains where each file type belongs.

On modern Windows systems, protected folders such as Program Files can also block or redirect an older installer. Rather than repeatedly running an unknown installer with elevated permissions, extract it to a temporary folder, inspect its contents and copy the files into the confirmed FS2004 installation.

How do I fix an installed aircraft that is missing?

An FS2004 aircraft will not appear unless its configuration files sit directly inside one aircraft folder and describe at least one usable variation.

  1. Find aircraft.cfg. It should be at a path such as FS2004\Aircraft\AircraftName\aircraft.cfg. If the same aircraft folder is repeated twice, move the complete inner folder up one level.
  2. Confirm that it is a complete aircraft. A repaint containing only a texture folder is not flyable by itself. Install the named base model first, then follow the repaint's instructions for adding its [fltsim.x] entry.
  3. Check the variation entry. Its title= value must be unique, while sim= must match the supplied .air filename without the extension. Incorrect model=, panel= or sound= references can also leave the variation incomplete.
  4. Show all variations. In the aircraft selection screen, enable the option to display all variations and check the manufacturer, aircraft type and publisher lists.
  5. Verify compatibility. The package must support FS2004 or FS9. An aircraft built only for FSX or a later simulator does not become FS2004-compatible merely by placing it in the Aircraft folder.

How do I make installed FS2004 scenery appear?

FS2004 scenery normally has to be registered in the Scenery Library; copying its folder into the simulator is not always enough.

  1. Inspect the area folder. It should contain a scenery subfolder holding the .bgl files and, where provided, a neighbouring texture subfolder.
  2. Remove extra nesting. Do not select a wrapper folder that contains another identically named area folder. The folder added to the library should be the one directly above scenery.
  3. Add the area. Open FS2004's Scenery Library, choose Add Area and select that folder.
  4. Restart FS2004. The simulator needs to rebuild its scenery information before some additions become visible.

If the area is listed but the airport, terrain or objects remain absent, check its library priority, intended coordinates and required object libraries. Our checks for FS2004 scenery that remains invisible cover those conflicts without repeating the basic installation process.

What if the add-on appears but parts are missing?

An aircraft with a blank panel, silent sound set or missing gauges has passed the visibility test but still lacks files or valid aliases. Keep supplied gauge archives in the form required by the package, place shared files in the correct FS2004 folders, and confirm that any aliased panel or sound set belongs to an installed aircraft.

Do not merge every supplied folder into the aircraft directory: shared Gauges and Effects files normally belong under the main FS2004 installation. The correct layouts and alias checks are covered in our panel, gauge and sound installation instructions.
