The two aircraft above are strong complete-package examples, not a claim that every simmer needs an airliner. General aviation and military flyers should apply the same test: choose an FS2004-native package containing the model, textures, panel, sound, flight dynamics and installation instructions.
FS Recorder is useful for recording flights, replaying approaches and creating formation sequences. An AFCAD editor is valuable only when you need to change parking, taxiways or runway use. FSUIPC should usually be treated as a dependency for add-ons that request it, not as a universal performance upgrade.
How do you choose a good FS2004 aircraft?
Choose aircraft made for FS2004 and favour complete packages unless you already have the exact base model required by a repaint.
- Check whether it is complete: the aircraft folder should include or explicitly reference its model, panel, sound and textures, along with
aircraft.cfgand an.airfile. - Distinguish repaints from aircraft: a package labelled “textures only” needs the stated base model and often a particular model variant. A similar-looking aircraft from another developer will not substitute for it.
- Read the cockpit description: some excellent FS2004 freeware uses a detailed 2D panel but has no functional virtual cockpit. Do not assume every exterior model includes both.

Retain one preferred airport and AFCAD layout, placing detailed local scenery above broader regional layers when the package instructions require it.
Elevation problems are a separate conflict. If an airport appears on a plateau or in a trench, look for another mesh, flatten or airport-elevation file affecting the same location rather than repeatedly changing the scenery order.
How do you avoid conflicts and poor performance?
Add one package at a time, test it in a known flight and keep a record of every file or scenery layer added.
