Install FS2004 scenery add-ons correctly: folder layout, Scenery Library steps, priority order, restart requirements and fixes for missing scenery.
To install scenery add-ons in Flight Simulator 2004 (FS2004), extract the download, place its top-level folder—containing Scenery and usually Texture subfolders—inside FS2004’s Addon Scenery folder, then add that top-level folder through Settings > Scenery Library. Enable it, set its priority, close the library and restart FS2004.
Where should FS2004 scenery files go?
FS2004 scenery should normally have a dedicated folder beneath Addon Scenery, with the BGL files and textures kept in their respective subfolders.
A typical finished installation looks like this:
Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\Example Airport\Scenery\airport.bgl
Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\Example Airport\Texture\texture files
| Download layout | What to do |
|---|---|
| A folder containing Scenery and Texture | Copy that whole folder into Addon Scenery. |
| An archive beginning with an Addon Scenery folder | Merge its contents with your existing Addon Scenery folder. Do not create Addon Scenery\Addon Scenery. |
| Loose BGL and texture files | Follow the included instructions. A dedicated scenery area is easier to manage, but some older packages specifically use the shared Addon Scenery\scenery and Addon Scenery\texture folders. |
| An executable installer | Point it to the FS2004 installation containing fs9.exe. Check the Scenery Library afterwards because some installers register the area automatically. |
Only use scenery intended for FS2004 or explicitly described as FS9-compatible. Scenery compiled for FSX or Prepar3D should not be assumed to work in FS2004.
How do I add scenery to the FS2004 Scenery Library?
Register the folder that directly contains the Scenery and Texture subfolders, not the inner Scenery folder itself.
- Read the package instructions. Check for required object libraries, replacement files or a prescribed installation location. Back up any existing file the package tells you to overwrite.
- Close FS2004. Extract the ZIP or other archive to a temporary location; FS2004 cannot load scenery from inside a compressed archive.
- Find the correct simulator installation. If you have several copies or an old backup, use the folder containing the
fs9.exeyou actually launch. - Copy the scenery folder. Place the complete package beneath
Addon Scenerywhile preserving its Scenery and Texture structure. - Open the Scenery Library. Start FS2004, open
Settings > Scenery Libraryand first check whether an installer has already created the entry. - Add the area if necessary. Choose Add Area, browse to the package’s top-level folder and confirm it. Make sure the entry is enabled.
- Apply the change and restart. Move the area to the required priority, accept the library changes, close FS2004 and launch it again.

Why does my installed FS2004 scenery not appear?
If installed FS2004 scenery does not appear, the cause is usually an incorrect folder level, an inactive library entry, a missing dependency or a conflicting version of the same airport.
- Wrong folder nesting: the active folder must directly contain
Sceneryand, when supplied,Texture. Extra duplicated package folders are a common mistake. - Wrong directory selected: add
Example Airportto the library, notExample Airport\Scenery. - Wrong FS2004 installation: confirm that the files are beside the same
fs9.exeused by your shortcut. - No restart: verify that the scenery is enabled, accept the library changes and restart the simulator.
- Missing libraries: some airports supply only placement data and require separate object or texture libraries named in the documentation.
- Display settings: low scenery-complexity settings can hide optional buildings and objects even when runways or ground scenery are loaded.
- Conflicting airport files: disable older scenery for the same location and test again. Duplicate airport, flatten or exclude BGL files can cause misplaced runways, elevation steps or disappearing objects.
What scenery priority should I use in FS2004?
Place a detailed airport above broader regional scenery that changes the same location; in FS2004, entries nearer the top of the Scenery Library have higher priority.
- Keep the preferred version of an airport above regional or city packages covering that area.
- Disable another version of the same airport rather than leaving both active.
- Leave default scenery entries alone unless the package documentation gives a specific reason to change them.
- Follow the package instructions for mesh and object libraries. Terrain mesh selection also depends on resolution, so a simple top-to-bottom rule does not resolve every mesh conflict.
To remove a problem package, disable it first and restart FS2004 to confirm the diagnosis. Then remove its library entry before deleting its folder; our FS2004 add-on removal instructions cover the clean-up process. Aircraft, panels, gauges and effects use different folders, so use our general FS2004 add-on installation guidance for those package types.
