Why do my wheels lock up when braking in FSX?

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, wheels usually lock because the brake command is applying full pressure, a toe-brake axis is reversed or partly active, or two controllers are sending brake inputs. Release the parking brake, test with the keyboard, then calibrate and de-duplicate the left and right brake axes.

Is this wheel lock-up or a stuck brake input?

A wheel that locks only during a long, hard brake application is usually receiving too much pressure; a brake that remains active after release points to a control or parking-brake problem. Tyre squeal, smoke and loss of steering during braking suggest lock-up, while persistent drag at idle suggests an unwanted input.

How do I stop the wheels locking in FSX?

The quickest fix is to isolate keyboard braking from controller braking, then verify that both toe-brake axes return fully to zero.

  1. Release the parking brake. The standard toggle is Ctrl+.. Our FSX brake and parking-brake keyboard command reference lists the normal controls for comparison.
  2. Test at low speed. Use a default aircraft on a clear apron and apply the normal brake key, ., briefly. If the brakes release as soon as the key is released, the keyboard command is working; holding it continuously may simply be locking the wheels through excessive pressure.
  3. Disconnect or disable flight controllers temporarily. Repeat the test using only the keyboard. If the unwanted braking disappears, one of the connected devices is sending a brake input.
  4. Inspect every controller's assignments. FSX may create automatic assignments when it detects a joystick, yoke, throttle or pedals. Keep the left and right brake axes only on the intended pedal device, and remove brake buttons or axes accidentally assigned elsewhere. If you use external control software, avoid assigning the same brake axis there and in FSX.
  5. Check axis direction. In the Windows controller test or calibration utility, each toe-brake axis must move smoothly and return fully to its released end.   6. Add a small null zone if necessary. A worn or noisy axis can continue sending a small brake value with the pedal released. Use only enough null zone to remove that residual input; an excessive setting wastes pedal travel and makes braking abrupt.
  7. Retest each side separately. Apply the left and right pedals individually at taxi speed. Both should begin braking at roughly the same pedal position and release completely.

A mistake we see constantly is checking only the rudder-pedal device while leaving an automatically assigned brake command on the yoke or throttle. If braking changes when another axis moves, follow the checks for tracing a brake input triggered by another flight control.

Why does one wheel lock before the other?

A one-sided lock usually means the two toe-brake axes have different calibration, reversal or null-zone settings. It can also happen when a differential-brake command is assigned to a button and activated alongside the pedal axis.

Compare both axes in the controller test panel. They should start from the same released position, increase smoothly and reach full travel without spikes. Also centre the rudder while testing: differential braking combined with a large rudder input can make the aircraft pull more sharply than expected.

Will anti-skid or autobrake prevent wheel lock?

Anti-skid can reduce wheel lock only when the selected aircraft actually models it and the system is switched on and serviceable. FSX does not provide universal anti-skid protection for every aircraft, and simpler models may allow the tyres to skid under a sustained full-brake command.

Autobrake is not the same system: it targets a deceleration rate after landing, while anti-skid modulates pressure to protect the tyres. Do not hold the keyboard brake command on top of an active autobrake system. An unwanted controller input must still be corrected rather than masked with an aircraft system.

What braking technique works without toe-brake pedals?

Without proportional pedals, use short brake applications rather than holding . continuously. Let aerodynamic drag, spoilers and reverse thrust reduce speed first where the aircraft supports them, keep the rudder centred, and avoid holding the brakes before touchdown.
