Fix FSX joystick force feedback by checking hardware support, Windows drivers, simulator controls and missing Aircraft.cfg force-feedback entries.
To fix joystick force feedback in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, first confirm the controller is a true force-feedback device, not merely a spring-centred or rumble-only stick. Then verify its Windows driver, enable controllers and force feedback in FSX, and test a default aircraft before changing add-on aircraft files.
How do I identify where force feedback is failing?
FSX force feedback depends on the hardware, its power supply, the Windows DirectInput driver, the simulator settings and the selected aircraft. Test that chain in order rather than reinstalling FSX immediately.
- Confirm the joystick supports genuine force feedback. A motorised force-feedback stick can apply variable forces commanded by the simulator. An ordinary centring spring or a controller advertised only with vibration cannot reproduce FSX force effects.
- Check the external power supply. Many older force-feedback joysticks use USB for data but require a separate power adaptor for the motors. The axes and buttons may work perfectly with that adaptor disconnected. Use only the manufacturer-specified supply; a matching plug does not guarantee the correct voltage or polarity.
- Connect the stick before starting FSX. Plug it directly into the PC where possible, avoiding an unpowered hub. A basic game-port-to-USB adaptor may pass axes and buttons while omitting force feedback entirely.
- Test it in Windows. Press Windows key and R, enter
joy.cpl, select the controller and open its properties. Check the axes and buttons, then use the manufacturer's effect test if one is supplied. Install the driver intended for the exact joystick model and Windows edition, then restart the PC. A generic driver may expose normal inputs without exposing the motors to DirectInput. - Enable the controller inside FSX. Open the simulator's Controls settings, select the physical joystick under Controller Type and ensure controllers are enabled. Turn on the force-feedback option shown for the device. Restart FSX after reconnecting hardware or changing its driver.
- Remove virtual-device conflicts. Temporarily close controller wrappers, remappers and profiler software that creates a virtual joystick. Such a device can accept the axes while providing no route back to the physical stick's motors.
- Test a stock aircraft. Use a default FSX aircraft and check for effects during taxi, touchdown and an approaching stall. FSX does not necessarily apply a strong continuous load throughout every flight phase, so the absence of constant resistance does not by itself prove a fault.
Why does force feedback work in Windows but not FSX?
A successful Windows effect test proves that the hardware and driver can operate the motors, but FSX must still address the same DirectInput device and load suitable aircraft effect definitions.

Why does force feedback fail only in an add-on aircraft?
If stock aircraft produce effects, the joystick, Windows driver and global FSX setting are already working. The fault is normally confined to the add-on's Aircraft.cfg.
Close FSX, back up the affected Aircraft.cfg and look for a [forcefeedback] section. Do not blindly copy values from an unrelated aircraft: landing-gear layout, aircraft type and intended effect strength differ.
Our utility for adding or removing Aircraft.cfg force-feedback definitions can correct missing or abnormal entries on supported aircraft. It cannot repair a failed driver, an unpowered joystick or an adaptor that does not transmit force-feedback commands.
Can an old force-feedback joystick work on Windows 10 or 11?
An older joystick can work if Windows recognises its force-feedback interface and a compatible DirectInput driver is available. Native USB models have a better chance than game-port hardware connected through a generic USB adaptor.
Detection is model-specific. Some devices work as standard controllers but lose their programmable effects or motor support under a generic driver. Should I reset FSX or reinstall it?
Reinstalling FSX is rarely the right first fix because it cannot add motor power, restore an incompatible driver or make an input-only adaptor support force feedback. Reset the simulator configuration only after the joystick passes a Windows effect test but remains inactive in every stock FSX aircraft.
- Back up the active profile. Close FSX, open
%APPDATA%\Microsoftand locate the profile used by FSX or FSX: Steam Edition. Boxed and Steam installations can use different profile folders, particularly when both have been installed. - Let FSX create a clean configuration. Rename the active configuration file rather than deleting it, start FSX and allow the simulator to generate a replacement. This resets many graphics, sound and controller preferences, so keep the backup.
- Test before restoring anything. Enable the joystick and force feedback, then fly a default aircraft. If it works, recreate the required settings manually instead of restoring the old controller configuration wholesale.
Consider repairing the FSX installation only if a clean profile still fails despite a successful Windows force-effect test and the correct physical controller being selected. Test without third-party controller software or add-on aircraft before doing so.
