Fix Meta Quest or Oculus VR not working in MSFS 2024 with the right PC VR connection, OpenXR runtime, launch order and headset checks.
To fix Meta Quest or Oculus VR in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, confirm you are using the PC version, connect Quest Link, Air Link or Virtual Desktop before entering VR, select the matching OpenXR runtime, then bind or press Toggle VR Mode. Runtime mismatches and inactive PC VR sessions cause most headset detection failures.
Can Meta Quest run MSFS 2024 on Xbox, PS5 or standalone?
Meta Quest works with MSFS 2024 only by streaming PC VR from a Windows PC; it is not a native Quest or console VR application.
| Platform | Meta Quest VR support |
|---|---|
| Windows PC | Yes, through Quest Link, Air Link, Virtual Desktop or another compatible PC VR connection. |
| Xbox Series X|S | No. Quest cannot provide VR for the Xbox version or cloud-streamed version. |
| PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro | No. PSVR2 support belongs to a separate free 2026 update and does not add Quest compatibility. |
| Quest standalone | No. MSFS 2024 cannot be installed or run as a native Quest application. |
If the PC VR connection has not yet been configured, follow our Meta Quest 3 connection guide for Link, Air Link and Virtual Desktop before troubleshooting the simulator itself.
Which OpenXR runtime should Meta Quest use?
The active OpenXR runtime must match the software carrying the VR session from the PC to the headset.
| Connection method | OpenXR runtime to use | What must be running first |
|---|---|---|
| Quest Link cable | Meta Quest Link | The Meta PC application and an active Link session inside the headset |
| Air Link | Meta Quest Link | The Meta PC application and a connected Air Link session |
| Virtual Desktop | VDXR is normally the first choice; use SteamVR only when intentionally selecting that route | Virtual Desktop Streamer and a connected headset session |
| Steam Link | SteamVR | Steam Link and a working SteamVR headset session |
| Older Oculus Rift hardware | Meta Quest Link | The Meta PC application must recognise and initialise the headset |
A mistake we see constantly is mixing connection stacks: starting Quest Link, selecting SteamVR as OpenXR, and then launching Virtual Desktop as well. Choose one route and close the others. Buying MSFS 2024 through Steam does not by itself mean SteamVR must be the active runtime.
Use our OpenXR runtime-selection walkthrough if you need the exact choice for Meta Link, Virtual Desktop or SteamVR. OpenXR Toolkit, if installed, is an optional API layer rather than an OpenXR runtime; it cannot make an undetected Quest appear.
How do I reset the Quest VR connection?
The quickest fix is to prove that the headset has a live PC VR session before changing any Microsoft Flight Simulator settings.
- Close every VR application. Exit MSFS 2024, SteamVR, Virtual Desktop and the Meta PC application rather than leaving them minimised.
- Restart the PC and headset. This clears abandoned OpenXR and Link sessions that can survive an ordinary simulator restart.
- Test the transport. For wired Link, use a data-capable USB cable connected directly to a suitable PC port rather than a charging-only cable or an unpowered hub. For Air Link or Virtual Desktop, avoid guest Wi-Fi and network isolation; connecting the PC to the router by Ethernet removes a common wireless bottleneck.
- Start one connection method. Enter the Quest Link environment, establish Air Link, or connect through Virtual Desktop. Merely seeing the headset listed in the desktop application is not enough—the PC VR session itself must be open.
- Set the matching OpenXR runtime. Use the Meta application for Link or Air Link, VDXR for the usual Virtual Desktop route, or SteamVR for Steam Link. If SteamVR opens unexpectedly while Meta or VDXR is selected, close it and check the runtime again.
- Launch MSFS 2024 normally. Once the simulator has loaded, activate
Toggle VR Mode. The default keyboard shortcut is normallyCtrl+Tab, but imported and customised control profiles can remove it. - Check the control assignment. Search the keyboard controls for
Toggle VR Modeand bind it again if necessary. Click inside the simulator window before using the shortcut so another desktop application does not receive it. - Remove injectors for the first test. Disable OpenXR Toolkit, recording overlays, reshade injectors and other VR API layers. Reintroduce them one at a time only after native VR works.
- Test a clean flight. If switching to VR crashes the simulator, temporarily empty the Community folder and load a default aircraft at a simple airport. Update the simulator, graphics driver, Meta software and headset software before reinstalling either MSFS or the Meta application.
Why does MSFS 2024 say no headset detected?
The “no headset detected” message means the active OpenXR runtime cannot see a live headset session when MSFS requests VR mode.
- If the Meta application recognises the USB connection but the headset has not entered Quest Link, start Link inside the headset.
- If Virtual Desktop shows the PC but MSFS reports no headset, confirm that its selected OpenXR route is VDXR or SteamVR and that the corresponding runtime is active.
- If SteamVR opens but reports no headset, repair that connection before starting MSFS; the simulator cannot initialise a headset that SteamVR itself cannot see.
- If changing the runtime appears to do nothing, close MSFS completely before trying again. Runtime changes do not reliably repair an OpenXR session that is already open.
Our focused MSFS headset-detection checklist covers connection order, platform support and Toggle VR Mode when the error persists.
What if Quest connects but the headset remains black?
A black Quest display with a working VR image on the monitor usually points to the Link, Air Link or Virtual Desktop transport rather than MSFS rendering.
Toggle back to 2D, restart the headset connection and then re-enter VR. If both the monitor’s VR view and the headset are blank, disable OpenXR layers and overlays, reset the VR graphics preset to conservative settings, and test without Community add-ons. If Oculus Debug Tool settings were manually forced, return its encode, bitrate and ASW overrides to their defaults.
Use our VR black-screen diagnosis for MSFS to separate runtime conflicts, driver faults, launch-order problems and graphics overload.
What if VR works but is unusably stuttery?
Once the cockpit appears in the headset, detection is fixed and the remaining fault is either wireless transport or rendering performance. Test wired Quest Link: if wired play is smooth but Air Link or Virtual Desktop is not, concentrate on the router, channel congestion and streaming bitrate. If both routes struggle, lower the MSFS VR render scale and demanding VR graphics settings before changing connection software.
Do older Oculus headsets use the same fix?
Older Oculus-branded hardware can work only when the Meta PC software still recognises it and exposes it through OpenXR.
Rift-style headsets do not use Quest’s standalone mode, while older Quest models still require a functioning PC VR transport. The decisive test is outside MSFS: if the Meta software cannot initialise the headset and open a PC VR session, the simulator cannot detect or repair it.
