Fix an MSFS 2024 VR setup that will not start: select the right OpenXR runtime, stop software conflicts, check controls and isolate crashes.
MSFS 2024 VR setup usually fails because the headset is not already in PC VR mode, the wrong OpenXR runtime is active, or two VR platforms are competing. Connect the headset first, select one matching OpenXR runtime, launch its compositor, then start Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and use a bound Toggle VR Mode command.
Fix MSFS 2024 VR setup in the right order
The fastest fix is to rebuild the connection chain from the headset to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 rather than changing graphics settings at random.
- Confirm that you are using a supported VR route. On PC, the headset must support PC VR through its vendor software, SteamVR, Virtual Desktop or another compatible OpenXR path. A standalone Quest session is not enough; it must be connected to the PC through Link, Air Link or Virtual Desktop.
- Establish the headset connection before opening MSFS. The headset should already show its PC VR home, dashboard or desktop view. If its own software cannot see the hardware, MSFS cannot see it either. Work through our headset detection checks for cables, wireless sessions and connection order before changing the simulator.
- Select one OpenXR runtime. Set the runtime belonging to the connection method you intend to use. The store that supplied MSFS does not decide this: a Steam copy can use the Meta runtime, while a Microsoft Store copy can use SteamVR.
- Close competing VR software. Do not leave Meta Link, SteamVR and Virtual Desktop running together unless your chosen route explicitly needs them. Restart the headset software and MSFS after changing the active runtime.
- Check the VR control binding. Search the controls for
Toggle VR Modeand assign it to the keyboard or another device. Imported or customised profiles can leave the command unassigned. BindReset VR Cameraas well, then save the profile. - Test with a clean simulator. Load a default aircraft at a simple airport, temporarily move add-ons out of the Community folder, and disable ReShade, capture overlays, performance injectors and optional OpenXR API layers. Enter VR only after this baseline flight has loaded.
- Update the components that form the VR chain. Install a stable graphics driver and applicable headset-software updates, then restart Windows. Reinstalling the entire simulator should be a last resort because it does not reset an incorrectly selected OpenXR runtime.
Which OpenXR runtime should MSFS 2024 use?
MSFS 2024 should use the OpenXR runtime that matches how the headset is connected, not the launcher or store from which the simulator was installed.
| Connection method | Runtime to select | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest Link or Air Link | Meta's OpenXR runtime | Starting SteamVR unnecessarily or leaving another runtime active |
| Quest through Virtual Desktop | VDXR or SteamVR, matching the Virtual Desktop configuration | Selecting VDXR but launching the SteamVR route, or opening Meta Link as well |
| SteamVR-native headset | SteamVR OpenXR | SteamVR is open, but another application remains registered as the active runtime |
| Headset with vendor PC software | The vendor's compatible OpenXR runtime | Running a second compositor that intercepts the session |
Only one runtime is registered as active in Windows at a time. Our OpenXR runtime setup guide explains where to make that selection and how to avoid conflicts between Meta, SteamVR and Virtual Desktop.
For Quest hardware, connection method matters as much as the runtime. The Quest-specific MSFS 2024 troubleshooting steps cover Link, Air Link and Virtual Desktop separately.
What if Toggle VR Mode does nothing?
If the headset works in its own PC software but the Toggle VR Mode command does nothing, the likely causes are an unbound control, the wrong active profile, lost window focus or failed OpenXR initialisation.
- Search all active control profiles for
Toggle VR Moderather than assuming a familiar shortcut is still assigned. - Remove duplicate bindings and confirm that the edited profile is the one MSFS has loaded.
- Give the simulator window focus before pressing the shortcut; an overlay or desktop application may otherwise capture it.
- Restart MSFS after changing runtimes. Runtime changes made while the simulator is open may not affect that session.
- If the command is registered but no headset image appears, return to the OpenXR and compositor checks. The binding is no longer the main suspect.
Why does MSFS 2024 crash when VR starts?
A crash during the switch to VR usually points to an injected overlay, incompatible add-on, graphics-driver problem or sudden GPU memory pressure rather than a missing control binding.
Disable optional OpenXR layers, recording overlays, ReShade and third-party frame or display tools. Test a stock aircraft with the Community folder temporarily empty. If one aircraft crashes but default aircraft do not, investigate that aircraft or its dependencies rather than reinstalling VR software.
If every default aircraft crashes at the transition, reduce demanding graphics options before switching, close GPU-heavy background applications and retest with one compositor. Our VR-switch crash checklist covers driver, add-on and VRAM-related failures in more depth.
Does MSFS 2024 VR work on Xbox or PS5?
These Windows OpenXR steps apply to PC VR only. Xbox Series X|S has no VR mode. On PlayStation 5, PSVR2 support is delivered through a free 2026 update and follows the console's own setup path, so Windows runtimes, SteamVR and PC control bindings do not apply.
