Fix MSFS fullscreen not working on Windows 11: correct resolution, monitor, DPI and GPU scaling, plus taskbar and black-screen fixes.
To fix Microsoft Flight Simulator fullscreen on Windows 11, first match Windows and the simulator to your monitor's native resolution, then toggle Windowed and Full Screen and apply each change. If it still fails, set the intended monitor as primary, remove DPI compatibility overrides, reset GPU scaling and disable conflicting overlays.
These checks apply to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 on PC. Menu wording differs slightly between releases, but the underlying Windows display problems are the same.
How do you reset MSFS fullscreen correctly?
The reliable sequence is to correct the Windows display first, enter Windowed mode and then reselect Full Screen inside the simulator.
- Set the monitor's native resolution in Windows. Open
Settings > System > Display, select the screen used for MSFS and choose its recommended or native resolution. Under advanced display settings, select a refresh rate the monitor supports reliably. - Choose the correct primary monitor. With the intended screen selected, enable
Make this my main display. This is especially important after disconnecting a television, VR headset or second monitor. - Switch MSFS to Windowed mode. Open the simulator's PC graphics or display options, select
Windowed, and apply and save the change. - Select Full Screen again. Change the display mode to
Full Screen. If a fullscreen resolution option is shown, set it to the same native resolution used by Windows, then apply the setting. - Use the keyboard toggle if necessary. Press

What does each fullscreen symptom mean?
The symptom usually identifies whether the fault sits with MSFS, Windows or the graphics driver.

Why does MSFS fullscreen look borderless?
MSFS fullscreen on Windows can behave like a borderless window rather than the old exclusive-fullscreen mode used by some games.
If the image covers the display, has no title bar or border and hides the taskbar, fullscreen is working even if Alt+Tab is quick. Maximising a Windowed-mode window is different: it can retain borders, leave the taskbar visible and use the desktop rather than the selected fullscreen resolution.
How do I remove the Windows 11 taskbar from fullscreen?
A taskbar displayed over MSFS is usually a Windows focus or Explorer problem, not a resolution fault.
- Press
Alt+Entertwice, allowing each mode change to finish, and then click inside MSFS. - Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, selectWindows Explorerand chooseRestart. - Temporarily disable recording, performance-monitoring and chat overlays. Re-enable them individually to identify the conflict.
- Turn Windows taskbar auto-hide off and back on if it has become stuck.
- Close third-party window-management tools while testing, particularly tools that remember window size or force applications into fixed screen regions.
What if fullscreen opens on the wrong monitor or goes black?
Wrong-monitor and black-screen failures are usually caused by saved window placement, an unsupported display mode or a per-application GPU profile.
For the wrong monitor, switch MSFS to Windowed mode and use Win+Shift+Left Arrow or Win+Shift+Right Arrow to move it. Close it normally on the intended screen, confirm that screen is the Windows primary display, relaunch, and then select Full Screen.
If the screen goes black, press Alt+Enter to recover Windowed mode. Temporarily turn off Windows HDR, custom resolutions and variable-refresh features, then test the monitor's native resolution at a known-good refresh rate. Add those features back one at a time.

Can GPU scaling prevent MSFS from filling the screen?
Forced GPU scaling can make MSFS appear centred, stretched or surrounded by black bars even when Full Screen is selected.
Reset the simulator's application profile in the GPU control software and remove forced custom resolutions or scaling overrides. On laptops, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics and ensure MSFS uses the intended high-performance adapter. Does render scaling fix fullscreen size?
Render scaling changes the resolution used to draw the 3D scene; it does not determine the size of the MSFS window or which monitor it occupies.
Use 100 temporarily while diagnosing fullscreen, then adjust it for performance after the display mode works. If fullscreen fills the monitor but the cockpit or scenery remains soft, follow our native-resolution and render-scaling checks for a blurry MSFS image.
What if the Full Screen setting will not save?
A display mode that reverts after every launch usually means MSFS did not save the graphics configuration or another service restored an older setting.
- Reset only the graphics page to its defaults, apply the reset, and then select Full Screen again.
- Exit MSFS through its own menus after saving. A crash or forced closure can discard the new state.
- Remove Windows compatibility mode and any forced high-DPI scaling override from the simulator executable or shortcut, where those properties are available.
- Check that MSFS configuration files and their parent folder are not marked read-only or blocked by Windows security software.
- Update the graphics driver or reset its MSFS application profile if the problem began after changing driver settings.
Do not delete configuration files as the first fix. In MSFS 2020, UserCfg.opt can include the installed-packages location; removing it carelessly may make the simulator appear to have lost its downloaded content. Reinstalling the whole simulator is also unlikely to correct a Windows resolution, monitor or scaling mismatch.
