Is the Saitek quadrant faulty, or is FS2004 misreading it?
Windows Game Controllers reveals whether the fault is in the hardware or inside Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. Do this test before reinstalling drivers or changing aircraft settings.
- Identify the quadrant type. A standalone quadrant connects to USB and normally appears as its own Windows controller. The quadrant supplied with a Saitek or Logitech yoke uses a round connector and appears as part of the yoke, not as a separate device. Connect that plug only to the matching socket on the yoke, never to a computer's keyboard or mouse port.
- Open the Windows test panel. Press the Windows and R keys, enter

How do I assign the throttle quadrant axes in FS2004?
FS2004 must have joystick input enabled and each lever assigned under the joystick-axis controls. A mistake we see constantly is assigning a lever to a button command such as throttle increase instead of the continuous throttle axis.
- Start with a neutral controller profile. Disable any profile that converts lever movement into keyboard commands. Analogue axes should reach FS2004 as axes.
- Open the Controls assignments. Confirm joystick input is enabled, then select the correct controller from the device list. A yoke-connected quadrant may be listed under the yoke's name.
- Use the joystick-axis list. Assign the levers by moving them when prompted. Do not use the Buttons/Keys list for normal throttle, propeller or mixture movement.
- Apply the standard mapping. Assign the black lever to
Throttle axis, blue toPropeller axis, and red toMixture axis. These are continuous controls. - Remove duplicate bindings. Clear the same throttle axis from gamepads, yoke sliders and other controllers. Also remove accidental assignments created when FS2004 first detected the device.
- Set direction and response. Use the reverse option if a cockpit lever moves opposite to the physical lever. Start with high axis sensitivity and a small null zone; a large null zone can discard useful travel.

Why is the throttle reversed, jumping or using only part of its travel?
Reversed or unstable response usually comes from inversion in two places, duplicate axes, incomplete Windows calibration or competing control software.
- Lever works backwards: enable reversal in FS2004 or in your external axis utility, but not both. Two inversions cancel each other and make later troubleshooting confusing.
- Lever reaches only part throttle: check

If Windows also shows partial travel, recalibrate there. - Throttle jumps between positions: remove duplicate assignments from every connected controller. If FSUIPC or another axis utility is assigning the quadrant, choose one control system: clear the corresponding FS2004 axis or clear the external assignment. Sending the same lever through both paths can cause jumps, reversed input and poor end-point response.
Can the three levers control separate engines?
The usual black, blue and red arrangement represents throttle, propeller and mixture, not three separate throttles. Blue and red therefore may appear to do nothing in a jet, which is normal if that aircraft has no propeller-pitch or mixture controls.
For independent multi-engine throttles, assign separate levers to the engine-specific throttle axes rather than to propeller and mixture. Use this arrangement only when the aircraft and number of available levers match; otherwise, one general throttle axis should command all engines together.
What should I try if FS2004 still does not detect the quadrant?
If Windows reads the quadrant correctly but FS2004 does not, rebuild the simulator's controller setup with as few connected devices as possible.
- Close FS2004 and disconnect controllers that are not required for the test.
- Connect the yoke or quadrant, verify it in
joy.cpl, and then launch FS2004 so the older simulator enumerates an already-active device. - Record any custom bindings, restore the default controls if necessary, and assign only the three quadrant axes again.
- Keep the controller on the same USB port once it works; changing ports can make older software treat it as a different device.
- Retest in the default Cessna 172. If that aircraft responds correctly, the remaining fault belongs to the add-on aircraft, its panel logic or its saved control profile rather than the quadrant.
