How do I install and configure ReShade in FS2004?

To install ReShade in FS2004, point the ReShade installer at fs9.exe, select the DirectX 9 renderer, install only the shader packages you need, then create a preset from the in-game overlay. How do I install ReShade in FS2004?

  1. Find the FS2004 root folder. This is the folder containing fs9.exe, not the Aircraft, Modules or Scenery folder. Installation paths vary by Windows version and FS2004 edition; our guide to locating the FS2004 folder and installing add-ons explains how to identify it.
  2. Check for an existing DirectX wrapper. Look beside fs9.exe for an existing d3d9.dll. It may belong to another shader injector, graphics wrapper or an older SweetFX installation. Back it up and establish what installed it rather than overwriting it blindly; two programs cannot normally use the same proxy DLL independently.
  3. Select the correct executable. Close FS2004, run the ReShade installer and browse directly to fs9.exe. FS2004 is a 32-bit application, so never substitute a manually downloaded 64-bit DLL.
  4. Choose DirectX 9. FS2004 uses the Direct3D 9 renderer. Selecting DirectX 10/11/12, OpenGL or Vulkan will prevent ReShade from loading.
  5. Install a small shader set. Select packages containing SMAA, a sharpening filter, Levels, Curves or Tonemap, Vibrance and optional Deband. Package names and included effects can differ between ReShade releases, so install by effect rather than selecting every available package.
  6. Launch FS2004 and open the overlay. A ReShade banner should appear while the simulator starts. Press the overlay key shown in that message—commonly Home—complete the short tutorial and create a new preset.
  7. Enable effects individually. Turn on one shader, adjust it, and inspect an external view, the virtual cockpit, the 2D panel, clouds and night lighting before adding another. This makes a faulty or expensive effect easy to identify.

If FS2004 is installed under a protected Windows folder, ReShade may load but fail to save its configuration or preset. Give your normal user account write access to the FS2004 folder or save the preset in a writable location; running the simulator permanently as administrator is not a good substitute for fixing permissions.

Which ReShade settings improve FS2004 graphics?

A restrained preset works best because ReShade processes the completed FS2004 image, including gauges, menus and text. It cannot increase texture resolution, add autogen or improve terrain geometry.

Place anti-aliasing before sharpening in the effect order. A sensible sequence is SMAA, optional Deband, one colour or tonal shader, optional Bloom, then sharpening last. The exact ordering controls may differ between ReShade releases.

A common mistake we see is trying to repair poor filtering with more sharpening. Anisotropic filtering and conventional anti-aliasing are better handled by FS2004 or the graphics driver; NVIDIA users can use our driver settings for older flight simulators as a starting point. Shader effects also cannot correct low-resolution scenery, which is better addressed through careful FS9.cfg changes and visual upgrades.

How should I tune a ReShade preset without losing FPS?

Use the same paused daylight view while making comparisons, then test the finished preset in dense scenery, heavy cloud, the virtual cockpit and at night. Use ReShade's global effect toggle to compare the processed and original image without changing the camera.

  • Begin with one tonal effect and one sharpening effect.
  • Add SMAA only if existing anti-aliasing is insufficient.
  • Avoid ambient occlusion, ray-traced lighting, screen-space reflections, motion blur and depth of field on FS2004 unless there is a specific, verified need.
  • Judge performance in a demanding airport or weather situation, not over empty terrain.
  • Enable ReShade's performance mode, if present in the installed release, only after finishing the preset because it may lock effect parameters until disabled.

Also inspect the 2D cockpit and menus. ReShade normally processes those along with the 3D scene, so an exterior preset that looks dramatic can make panel text unpleasant to read.

Why is ReShade not opening or crashing FS2004?

A missing overlay usually means ReShade's DirectX 9 DLL was not loaded from the same folder as fs9.exe. Check the following causes in order:

  • Wrong executable or API: rerun the installer, select fs9.exe and choose DirectX 9.
  • Conflicting d3d9.dll: temporarily remove the conflict after backing it up. Graphics wrappers and older shader injectors commonly use the same filename.
  • Incomplete shader installation: compilation errors often mean the preset references an effect that was not installed, or its shader package does not match the ReShade release. Rerun the installer and repair the required packages.
  • Protected or blocked files: check that security software has not quarantined the DLL and that the FS2004 directory is writable.
  • Unsupported Windows or graphics hardware: FS2004 runs on operating systems much older than those supported by some ReShade builds. Use a ReShade release compatible with the machine rather than copying an unidentified DLL bundle into FS9.
  • Black screen or immediate crash: disable ReShade by renaming its root-folder d3d9.dll. If FS2004 then starts, remove all effects from the preset and re-enable them individually after resolving any wrapper conflict.

How do I remove ReShade from FS2004?

The safest removal method is to run the same ReShade installer, select fs9.exe and use its uninstall option if offered. Otherwise, close FS2004 and remove ReShade's d3d9.dll, configuration file, shader folder and presets from the FS2004 root directory.

Delete only files known to belong to ReShade. If another wrapper's d3d9.dll was renamed during installation, restore that original file afterwards, and never remove a DirectX DLL from a Windows system directory.
